Zinio offers fix for QuickTime + Flash quirk in their magazines
Zinio, if you aren't familiar, offers magazines in digital format (yes, with DRM), many of them with rich media like embedded movies right in the pages, for Mac and PC. They have quite a selection and they've been around for a few years now, but apparently their latest version (released around the dawn of time) is suffering a quirk due to Apple changing the way QuickTime renders Flash with the latest QuickTime 7.1.3 update, causing embedded rich media to misbehave.Fortunately, they've issued a fix via email, and it goes a little something like this:
- Close the Zinio Reader, if open
- Go to the QuickTime pane in System Preferences
- In the Advanced tab, check 'Enable Flash'
This fix, by the way, is also how you enable iTunes 7 to play interactive booklets from the iTunes Store according to this Apple KB article.

I've been a long time user of Zinio. All my historical problems were solved by deleting the ContentGuard directory, rebooting and reinstalling. However, now I've not been able to view any magazines since Nov. The standard fix doesn't work and no one is responding to any email nor answering any phones. They don't even have voice mail on their phone. I need help and I can't find a way of getting it.

I've never had any DRM issues - I keep the same magazine library on both machines. Price-wise, they seem comparable to the dead tree editions, but for me they are a heck of a lot more convenient. I am visually impaired, and the ability to blow up the magazine to whatever size I want is especially handy. Plus I don't have to deal with piles and piles of old magazines lying about - since I live in an apartment (and a rather small one at that), I don't have a lot of free space to store these things.
I used Zinio when it first came out. But after one of the Mac OS updates, it just wouldn't work anymore. They offered "fixes," but none of them helped. So I cancelled my subscription. What pisses me off is that they still send me e-mails and I have no way to stop them, since they cancelled my account and I can't get in to change my preferences. Zinio sucks.

Expensive? Most times their prices are either the same or less than the price of a standard magazine subscription. PC Magazine is $9.99, US World News - $15, Macworld $19...that doesn't seem ridiculously overpriced to me.
I love Zinio...I use to subscribe to a number of magazines and felt like a tree-killer whenever I looked at my coffee table. Don't have to worry about that anymore.
I can't say that I've had any run-ins with their DRM restrictions, and I've moved files between computers a few times - both Mac and Win - with no major issues. And expensive? Since when is 12 issues of Motor Trend for $12 expensive? It's much cheaper than the newsstand!

It's not just the file that checks for your account, the magazines are tied to your Mac address. For someone like me that changes computers often, it was just too much to call them each time and get scolded for moving machines.
