smcFanControl

I wasn't going to post about smcFanControl, but the last few days we have been getting at least 3 tips a day pointing it out. Clearly, there is an audience for this little app, so post about it I must!

smcFanControl, as you might have guessed, is a small application that lets you control the speed of the fans on your MacBook or MacBook Pro. Why would you want to do this? To keep it cool, of course!

Now, why wouldn't I want to post about this? Simple, I fear that many people are going to be running their fans at full speed for hours on end, and then the fans will fail. And then you need to get them replaced, and that's no fun.

smcFanControl is free, and requires an Intel Mac.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

ok, so i'm working from home with the mbp on my lap, and it's burning my legs. i remembered this app, installed it, and now my computer is 15° - 20° C cooler than it was 5 mintues ago. obviously i'll only be running this app when absolutely necessary, but it's a good find.

Since starting to use this piece of software on my MBP 15" the fan has actually started making some pretty unpleasant noises. Not good.

Yeah it's supposed to be, and I'm sure it works for most people. Just be advised...I have a 15 inch MBP, and that was the issue I had with it. But the link I gave you has been working better for me than any other solution I have tried.

This comes in handy for me since I like to use my MBP on my lap a lot, and setting the fans to 2500 or 3000 RPM really helps to keep it cool. And maybe I have bad hearing, but the noise difference is negligible.

I thought, as you have pointed out, that the setting was for a _minimum_ fan speed, meaning that it speed up if needed, but won't ever run slower than the minimum setting.

YMMV, but mine hasn't done anything crazy like that.

damn! I've wanted a PPC version for almost a year to turn the fan on because it can get hot, but everyone else wants to turn theirs off. GAH

I don't know, I already had one fan replaced for noise, it's not that bad.

That being said, I'll probably only occasionally use this app, but it IS one of those tools I love to have around. If the five fan control knobs on my desktop is any indication, being able to control my laptop fans will come in handy when I really need it. Now if I could just easily throttle cpu speed, then I'd be set.

This app is great, I can use to to make my fan make noise on demand for apple care.

Well, nice, but does anybody knows is there such an application for PowerBook g4? I started having some strange fan behaviour, and I would like to test it and see what is happening.

And if anybody knows: i just noticed that my fans stoped runing in some situations they always kicked in before. And PB is really hot. Any ideas on what is happening?

My co-workers has MacBook Pros has a zero fan speed for the left fan and around 1000 for the right. My MacBook Pro has around 1000 for both.

Plus one of his fans was making a crazy noise a couple days ago but since has stopped. The noise and the fan, we are thinking.
