Leopard Technology Overview

People have whipped themselves into a froth thanks to this Leopard Technology Overview, which is the first in an ADC series called Leopard Technology Series for Developers. Why are people so excited? Mostly because of the glimpses it gives us into Leopard. Here are some highlights:
- Interface Builder 3.0 – Core Animation support included and a new IB Kit API
- Xray – DTrace based GUI tool that allows you to visually see how your app is performing
- Dashcode – a Widget IDE which we have covered before
- Core Animation – create whizbang interfaces in no time flat!
- Objective-C 2.0 – lots of improvements to the language that Mac geeks love
- iChat integrated all over the place, including iChat Theatre, and an iChat API that will allow apps to poll iChat for presence info (i.e. are you online or not) and get contacts
- Resolution Independence – this allows the OS and apps scale without worrying about the resolution of the monitor
- Calendar Store – a central place that apps can query for iCal info

The resolution independence thing will be great for 30" cinema display owners and old people.

I'm excited about Leopard. Or rather was until Mr Gruber pointed out that Code Signing is now coming to Leopard. Woohoo. Now It's needed on Windows because there is just so much $&@! that could, with a single click
-kill the registry,
-dial premium rate numbers in the South Sandwich Islands (yes a real location!),
-and send your credit card details to a 13-year old hacker with a long Amazon wishlist.
I guess this could be an acknowledgement that Apple thinks that with Leopard they'll become more mainstream (and more prone to nasties). Or it could just be like Made for iPod where they want to make a few more bucks off of people's code ;)

Does resolution independence mean I can play Halo fullscreen at 800x600 then go to another program with command tab and it will be 1024x786? If so, then that's another feature that I care about.

Resolution independence, as I'm reading it, is the ability to scale (like can be done currently using control and the mouse wheel) without anything looking like it's blown up (blocky, like old Mac OS 9 icons in the dock using magnification).

I'm very curious as to what improvements to Python are going to be in Leopard.. I've heard that Twisted and PyObjC are going to be included now, which is great.. Does that mean that they are including binding to all their API's?? I dont know.. I've only started on the PyObjC path..

i know that Apple is trying to make iChat the next big thing......then why not add support for MSN? And Yahoo too...
I tried setting up a jabber but it didn't work, can anyone point me to some "Jabber for Dummies" type site?

I agree with Wackybit...
Everybody I know uses MSN-messenger and so do I.
But I want to use iChat, but can't because it doesn't support msn, which sucks!!!

i second that. after all the computer industry is microsofts turf. i've tried to convince some of my friends to use skype, but they don't want to deal with multiple chat clients only to video chat with me.
msn support in ichat would be truly awesome.

I've had 10.5 builds for a while now and they're just great.
