The iSight is Dead? Long live the iSight!

Hardmac reports that the stand-alone iSight as we know it has been given End of Life (EOL) status by Apple and that we should expect a new one within the next few months. While I can't currently find confirmation of that fact, I'd say it's a safe bet. The US and Canada Apple Stores do still list the iSight for sale, however, albeit with an estimated shipping time of 2-3 weeks. UK and European stores don't list the iSight for sale at all.

So what can we expect in a new and improved iSight? Hardmac speculates that Firewire will be dropped in favor of USB 2.0, for better PC and Windows compatibility and that Apple will add IR and an Apple Remote "to bring FrontRow functionalities to officially not supported Mac models." Personally I'd prefer it remain Firewire and add Bluetooth, but we'll just have to wait and see what Apple has in mind.

Hello "Built-in" iSight Cinema displays. I thought this may be coming down the pipe with all the discounted Cinema Displays on the internet and CompUSA.

I would think any revision to the isight would result in a substantial shrinking of the size of it using the components used in the built in version. I would also think you would see a reduction in the price. My bet is this will be one of those items for Macworld. A windows version of ichat would be most helpful since as good as ichat video conferencing is, you still can't do it with your windows counterpart, which is most of the people you know...

The isight will still be sold, need we not forget our mac mini and mac pro users. The mac pro lacks an isight and IR as well.

I have had an Isight since they were first released, I've ALWAYS loved it and used it daily for quite some time.

BUT...for the last sixth month, right around the time of one of the system updates or Ichat updates I have NOT been able to use it. Always get connection errors and other issues. I've gone to a test sight that runs a video to your Ichat and I get a clear video feed but I just can't video chat with anyone anymore. I can type and voice chat fine, but just no video.

Its not just me, i helped my friend set up her new 24 inch Imac last night(holy crap that is nice!!) and the first thing I went to show her was the video chat, and tried to video chat with my friend who also owns a 20 inch Imac, but bam, sure enough we got a connection issue!! It gave one of those "send to apple" deals afterwords. This was very embarassing since I basically bullyed her into buying a mac preaching how everything works perfectly...Doh!!

I've gone thru ALL of the Apple support forumns and tried everything.

Has anyone else been having these type of issues?

rock on....

USB 2.0 is the future, like it or not. Firewire is indeed superior technology, but it's more expensive to implement and just like Apple eventually had to cave on other standard technologies (IDE drives, VGA video, etc).

The one thing which could have saved Apple would have been Firewire 800 using the same connector as standard Firewire, like USB 2.0 using the same connector as USB, but despite having designed the specification and knowing they would be speeding it up in the future, the first Firewire connector they chose was somehow inadequate for Firewire 800. Dumb.

And, by the way, for webcams, USB 2.0 is good enough. It's still such a niche use anyway (probably less than 5% of PC users use webcams). The one I mentioned pack on page 1 does work pretty well, and it brings up the other problem with iSight-- four years later, it's still $149. Come on, Apple, the one chance you had with it was to get everyone to buy one, and holding that high price for so long was also dumb.

#17--correct! The built-in iSights in MacBooks (and iMacs too, I assume) are *already* USB! Go to System Profiler and look-- Hardware -> USB. (As are the built-in keyboard, trackpad, and bluetooth module. The keyboard was, until recently, ADB.)

Personally, I've been wondering when the iSights would get revved ever since I saw the first iMac integrated unit, and even more so after seeing how tiny they are in the notebooks. It's a tiny little button compared to the two-rolls-of-film sized regular iSight.

usb latency is worse/slower than firewire which is designed for video/audio. it may sufice to put a cheapo camera as usb in a built in device but a dedicated camera that can be used for doing prosumer video needs to stay firewire. otherwise poeple will just buy some other cheapo usb camera.

I hope the new iSight works better in low light, I used the original for about an hour and it's been in a drawer ever since. QuickCam Pro 4000 is 1/2 the price and much better in low light. Take heed Apple, those of us that work in caves need more light.
