Regardless of what one might think about Disco as a functioning application, it's hard to deny that the latest app from the Madebysofa crew certainly has a unique look to it, and it is spiffy to boot. For the Disco application icon, designers Jasper Hauser and Hugo van Heuven collaborated to create something that I think deserves almost as much praise and attention as the application itself. Jasper has been kind enough to recount for us on his blog how the icon came to be, and the thought processes behind it.Behind The Scenes with the Disco Icon

Though this really isn't about disco at all.. I just saw the words icon and i remebered something.... For those who use Google Sketchup for Mac. Move it to your dock, and turn magnification all the way up and look at the icon, and you will see the words Windows XP

Is it just me or is TUAW all over Disco's nuts?
No other program out there has recieved the constant attention from TUAW that this little app is getting. We get it. It's nifty.

It would be nice if the Disco icon wasn't so tiny in the dock. Looks teeny between Songbird's & iTunes' icons.

If I write a colorful Hello World program with a cool icon, charge $25 but give it away for $15 while in beta, I bet lots of people would get excited too.
It's a freaking icon people. Not to mention the app really doesn't seem to be anything groundbreaking for the price.

All I have to say is that these Disco people really know how to hype themselves up. That, and TUAW needs to stop giving these attention whores so much publicity just because they have an app with smoke and nice icon / tutorial.

The worst icon for a burning app, how to understand the purpose by this design?

Look... Mac apps are known for being beautiful, we get it. Disco leads the pack with some neat effects... but all this attention doesn't mean anything without a useful GUI and compelling features, non of which Disco has yet.
I expect more out of Mac apps than "smoke and mirrors" (literally in Disco's case) and it is about time we stand up and make clear that a clear GUI and good features MUST come first and the glossy Apple look second.

I just tried out Disco for the first time this week. Completely featureLESS, lacks UI integration with OS X, but yeah, great icon. Give me Toast any day over this.
