Questions abound about Zune vs. iPod Survey

TUAW's nerdy (yet surprisingly well off) little sister Blogging Stocks has a great roundup of articles regarding a recent ABI Research survey that purportedly showed 58% of consumers would choose a Microsoft Zune over an iPod. In the study, people were shown an image of the Zune, and then asked how likely they would be to purchase the device over another music player. According to Blogging Stocks, ABI mentions only that it compared the picture of the Zune to "other competitive media players," with no specific mention that the iPod was actually given as an option.

As soon as I saw the news about this, I was immediately suspicious. The fact that Apple essentially has control over the MP3 player market combined with early reports from multiple tech journalists that the Zune is flawed in more ways than one, led many to believe that perhaps the ABI hadn't been truly upfront when conducting their survey and reporting the results. I too would choose a Zune over, say, a Creative device; it would probably be a neat little device to hack; but that doesn't mean that I, nor likely 80% of the population would choose the brown device from Redmond over our beloved iPods.

I think the picture comparision thing was made up. I agree with blah #10 it wasn't mentioned anywhere else. Guess it's something like the tech journalists writing controversial stuff to generate buzz.

If the social aspects of Zune are appealing to you, and you’re a Windows user, then Zune is probably your best choice. If you’re not interested in the Wifi features, you will definetly want to look at the iPod. Here http://www.dvdtozune.com/zune-vs-ipod.html lists the detailed Zune and iPod comparison.

I think that Blogging Stocks made this up, it wasn't mentioned anywhere else.

I setup a little survey of my own and I have a feeling it should set the record straight.

You know, to be fair, this site is going to be just as biased as anything else. I mean come on, especially the mac community. I mean the "neat little device to hack" comment was pretty unnecessary. Does something seem weird abut this? Of course. But is it completly crazy, no. Already there has been reports that iPod owners are overly not as faithful as the mac computer owners. Furthermore, take Engadget's video review of the Zune interface. Not only is it pretty cool, read all those commments. There are a lot of people who said that they even own an iPod and are now considering getting the Zune next, or even saying that they already are planning on buying it. It looks to be be a pretty good contender bassed on the UI, and try not forgetting that the iPod isn't perfect. It's time to face to the fact that the iPod may have a true contender. Yes, it has happened.

It sounds to me like this survey is legit, given certain constraints. People don't buy the Creative Zen because it's better than the ipod; it's not by several measures.

My experience is that these products are purchased in a vacuum. Essentially, people buy them out of a lack of information about the other products or because their friends have them.

Presented with a Zune or a Zen or an Archos and no other options, a user is probably more likely to pick that option than "other mp3 players". That makes this survey at least somewhat valid insofar as there are a significant number of purchase decisions made this way.

If you click through to the iLounge story linked in the Blogging Stocks post, they quote ABI as saying that they did not do the survey for any specific client, but on thier own. Not sure I believe them.

There are many survey companies that perform biased surveys for a client so the client can make a point in an ad or to a market. The company I used to work for used this tactic all the time...

If a survey is to be believed the methodology and survey questions need to be published. The methodology should spell out sampling technique. Since surveys like this are not cheap (depending on the questions and analysis weren't talking about $20k to $75k for this sample size), it is important to know who commissioned the survey.

Some companies do high quality surveys on spec and publish the results hoping to lure internal business or more detailed analysis. This isn't the sort of survey you would do to drum up that sort of business.

It smells funny
