Update on the TUAW MacHeist invites
By now, the overwhelming numbers of you who signed up for a MacHeist invite have noticed you haven't received them yet. To be entirely honest, we weren't expecting over 800 replies, as our original bounty from the good folk behind MacHeist (and MyDreamApp) was 25 invites, which was promptly raised to 250 and then even 400. Due to the landslide of interest from you in joining the fun, it's taking us more time to figure out how to harvest everything we need to get an invite out to you all. Rest assured, we're working on a solution now, and we'll post it ASAP. Stay tuned.

I'm with Luke James, comment #21 above. I keep getting the same crap reply. Screw this silliness...I don't need crummy software for free this bad.

To summerize, it's a fun way ⦠to have fun?
I hope Jack Campbell could start a marketing scheme like this, it would be fun to watch!
I've registered, but because of finals, I won't be able to participate. Shoot me an email at matthewstokeley at gmail dot com and I'll send you my name and pass.

Sure this is Marketing, and yes, some of these apps are like extended trials, but even if all the apps were demos, the idea is to play the game for FUN. The apps you get are more perks than anything. I echo what every other person has said: You don't have any obligation to buy anything! If you hate the apps or they stop working after an update, you don't have to keep them! It's just a fun way for some not-so-popular developers to get their products out in the air and for the mac community to have some fun. If you like the products then you can buy the update if your **free** prizes break. If you don't like them, you can utilize this cool feature of Finder called the "Trash Can" and get rid of them for good. Better yet, if the app IS the real deal and you DON'T need to buy it on an update, then you'll walk away with a free application!
Complaining about free products, even if they have the possibility of being short lived, is lame. There are no strings attached to this, literally. You get the apps, the developers get their marketing, and those of us who think the software bundle at the end is worth it will buy it. No matter what, everybody playing walks away, hard drive (or trash can) stuffed with high quality free stuff.
@ Aaron Gyes:
Actually, you are getting completely free copies of those apps if you complete the heists. You can use the copies you downloaded forever.
I don't get the "extended trial" part that you mentioned since the apps don't expire.
Joel: That is like saying it's free to watch free-to-air broadcast television.
This is MARKETING -- enough people will be suckered in by this false excitement and sensationalism they managed to have community news outlets such as TUAW spread for the few "free" apps to be inconsequent. Also, you're not getting a real copy of Soulver or Assignment Planner or the Conversation Log thing. As soon as the developer puts out an update, they have all promised that it will start needing a registered key. Think of it as an extended trial.
