iTunes goes New Zealand

The New Zealand Herald reports that locals are looking forward to the anticipated opening of iTunes New Zealand. It's been a long time coming. Rumors about iTunesNZ have been floating around for nearly three years without the appearance of an actual storefront. Insiders in the NZ music industry report that local labels are now in active negotiations with Apple and that the new storefront may appear before the end of the year.

Thanks Al.

Very nice. Flying Nun has been one of my favorite labels through the years. Might make it easier to get some of their bands.

I'm not aware that we in New Zealand have ever had laws preventing DRM -- there are a number of other online music stores already operating here, such as txttunes.co.nz, coketunes.co.nz, and digirama.co.nz.

It's interesting to note that Campbell Smith, the president of the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ), is in breach of the iTunes Store's Terms and Conditions by using an American credit card to access the American iTunes store from New Zealand, which the NZHerald story linked above has him doing. This is likely due to licensing restrictions imposed by the same American record companies that Smith and RIANZ represent in New Zealand. What a hypocrite.

iTunes Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/service.html)

10. Territory. The Service is currently available only in the United States, and is not available in any other location. You agree not to use or attempt to use the Service from outside of the available territory, and that Apple may use technologies to verify your compliance.

(PS. I actually saw Campbell Smith in the Grey Lynn branch of Woolworth's two or three weeks ago. He didn't have his iPod with him though. New Zealand is small.)

Interesting. Didn't New Zealand have some liberal laws preventing DRM?

Or maybe that only applied to DVD Region coding?

(That is, region locked DVD players weren't permitted for sale. Although, aren't MacBook DVD drives region locked after 5 changes?)

Perhaps a Xena neighbor could comment?!

They have a store in Luxembourg, but not New Zealand. That's just weird.
