Rumors: AMD Apple Laptop?

Is an AMD Apple laptop in the works? That's the rumor that DigiTimes Systems published yesterday. According to Digitimes, Taiwan component makers are seeing increased orders for a kind of capacitor to be used in an AMD-based Apple notebook.

In September, AMD CEO Hector Ruiz speculated that Apple and AMD might do business together. However, the article mentions that a number of motherboard makers doubt the rumors, "noting the performance advantage Intel currently enjoys over AMD, especially for the Core 2 Duo processor compared with AMD's present CPU lineup. AMD is also considered to have insufficient capacity, the makers added."

AMD and ATI are now one and they're working on CPU+GPU's (cpu with a built in gpu)... I wonder what will become of that

Didn't AMD recently acquire ATI, I think remember that story, but I'm too lazy to look it up right now. If so, couldn't this just be confusion about which product Apple is buying from AMD, i.e., not CPUs but graphics processors? Just a thought.

It's going to be used in the lower cost device targeted at urban youth, co-branded with 50 Cent.

Watch and wait.
Praise me when I am correct.

This is a BS rumour. Intel and Apple have a great arrangment and Intel has so far proven that it will provide updated processors at an amazing rate. AMD doesn't have the volume to offer or the ability to keep up with Intel's fast pass. As Apple gains more marketshare this will continue to make Intel the only viable option.

Thge only chance I foresee is with AMD's server processors due out in a year from now. That is the only real avenue AMD has with APple and that is still a long way off.

to #2:

this is not the case at all, unlike the move from ppc to intel, using intel and amd cpus will not require anything from the developers standpoint, as they speak the same architectural language.

Daniel:

Well as long as the AMD cpu supports SSE1-3 that shouldn't be an issue, it'd be compatible with the same optimizations and their processors are the same architecture. Unless somebody added a brand-specific limitation to their program I can't see any issues arising.

This really doesn't mean much. That capacitor could be used in a lot of different electronic devices. There is nothing special about it.

whoa whoa whoa.......ANOTHER processor? Is this going to be like intel where programs will not work on it unless they are configured to do so or something.
