Apple Support doc on Intel Macs and 3rd party routers: "just restart it"

Well this doesn't sound like any fun: enough Intel Macs running 10.4.8 must be having a problem connecting wirelessly to some 3rd party routers that Apple had to publish a support doc on the topic. As icing on the cake, Apple's solution isn't a pretty one either. If your Intel Mac is having this problem, here's Apple's solution: restart the router. If that doesn't fix the problem, Apple then recommends calling the router's manufacturer to spend 45 minutes on hold, getting tossed around between operators who probably dish out the same troubleshooting technique, just like the books taught 'em.

Not exactly the most effective solution I've ever heard to a problem like this, but I guess one must take what one can get - at least until one can download Mac OS X 10.4.9.

I don't have a problem making or maintaining a connection with DLINK- DIR625 and Macbook Pro Core2Duo.

Using WPA the Macbook Pro connects and holds the connection every time.

What the Macbook Pro refuses to do is re-connect to the DLINK automatically when it reboots.

My iMac G5 does that with no problem.

In fact, a window appears which states the Macbook could not connect to "preferred" wireless connection even though the SSID is not "hidden" and the SSID name appears in the list when the AIRPORT icon in the menu bar is clicked.

Choosing that SSID in the list of networks results in a near immediate connection!

I have tried all possible settings...Automatic, preferred. Result is the same. It does not re-connect and I have to do it manually.

Anyone have this experience or know what might be preventing the automatic re-connect?

I am running 10.4.9 developer builds and as of the latest, the WPA + intel mac problem introduced in 10.4.8 is not fixed. It's hard to imagine apple doesn't know all about this bug, but just in case I have filed a detailed bug report through developer channels.

I have had the same problem on a D-Link router (DI-714P+) that has worked well with a variety of older Macs and PCs for the past couple of years. The 15" MacBook Pro says it is connected to the WEP encrypted LAN, but does not recognize internet connectivity.

Family member just got a new Intel iMac and can't get it to accept an IP from dlink DI-624. After struggling with it for a couple of hours I told her to call Apple in the morning. We'll see what they say. Pretty crappy for a new Apple users out-of-the-box experience.

Also wanted to add that for those of you having problems with dropped connections, make sure that it isn't a portable phone knocking out the connection. I had that problem with a Panasonic 2.4 GHz phone and Linksys WRT54G. Took me several months to figure out that everytime someone got on the phone the connection went down. Got rid of the phone.

MBP consistently disconnects from APPLE wireless router. I have used router for four+ years with no issues until Intel Mac Book Pro. Other mac G4 still keeps connection flawlessly. Only two solutions I've found: restart Apple wireless hub, or connect via wire to wire"less" hub. I have also found that each time neighbor turns on their Netgear, my MPB connection to my Apple router goes wonky, on-off, on-off, on-off, finally off.

running a linksys with dd-wrt installed. got a macbook pro core2. router started dropping ALL wireless connections when the macbook connected.

switched the preamble in advanced settings from LONG/AUTO to SHORT.

problem solved. (not sure why) Haven't had any reboots since.

This always happens to me pain in the butt. Ive had 2 netgear routers and now a linksys. My Thinkpad never looses connection and my hard wired pc is also never affected which connects through the router. It seems to the the computer. I have a fully updated Macbook 2ghz 2g ram etc this is my only gripe with this laptop. I have no problem connecting after rebooting the laptop. Im running WPA and it will drop connection here and there usually not letting me reconnect to my router until i reboot :( not quite the easy mac experience i was hoping for since my thinkpad which is also 2ghz core duo never drops connection under xp. Other than that small issue i love this computer!

After installing 10.4.8, my Powerbook 12" and iMac G5 both FREEZE (spinning beach-ball) indefinitely if connected to my USRobotics wireless router and if there's no wireless activity. ie. Leaving Mail.app open to check the email every 5 minutes prevents freezing, but closing it and absent other wireless activity - both will freeze after 15 minutes.
