Diskwarrior 4.0 is finally here!
Diskwarrior is The Essential Mac Disk Utility. Alsoft says so. I say so. Most Mac admins worth their salt say so. So there you have it.For too long we've been waiting on Alsoft to show us a little more love, though. Intel Macs are standard across the board, yet Diskwarrior still lingered in PPC-only purgatory. That made us sad. We muddled through, making do with other utilities from other companies, but none of them really filled the void left by Alsoft.
Today Diskwarrior loyalists have been rewarded for their patience, and Diskwarrior 4 is available for download or on CD. You'll need Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later to install it, but you can still use it to repair older systems, of course. Diskwarrior 4 is Universal Binary and boasts serious speed improvements and a host of major feature additions and enhancements. Complete details available on the product page, which I encourage you to read, with a concise summary of new features on the upgrade page (Thanks, Trevor!).
The price has gone up a bit (didn't it used to be $79?), but that's fine by me since there are a bunch of new features. $99.95 gets you the instant gratification download that you'll need to install on a bootable volume other than the one you need to repair, like another Mac or a Firewire drive with an OS already on it (10.3.9 or later). Alsoft will mail you an official bootable CD as well, covering all the bases. $49.95 gets you the CD-only upgrade. That's right - no download for upgraders, which kinda sucks, since you'll have to wait three to four weeks for delivery of your CD, but I know a number of people who will gladly pay the extra 50 bucks to download the full priced version, rather than wait another 3-4 weeks. Yes,

60 bucks, including shipping, for an upgrade? Ouch.

@EricJ not to worried about data loss on the workstations, they are all configured w/ portable home directories syncing every 15min so i have a copy of all user data on my server.
A physical hardware malfunction can cause intermittent loss of access to any data on the drive. If the malfunction is serious enough, the only way to retrieve the data on the drive is through an expensive data recovery service. DiskWarrior can be configured to automatically check drives for possible drive malfunction, giving you the chance to back up your data before a drive completely fails.

If you have a complete backup system, your files are saved on a decent server, or your files aren't all that vital, probably not. Otherwise, it'd be a good investment.
What I'd like to see is a read-only demo version... I have a hard drive in my closet that has a mess of deleted files, I'd love to get them back but $100 is a lot to drop on "maybe it can get them."
not a fluke, OSX is getting better & safer...but DW is the best emergency app out there. it's like getting insurance, if something goes terribly wrong, DW will probably save you...it save me many times.
you should definitely get it,
zx
The "complete details" link is incorrect. The page that lists new features is here:

@ look - there were no tips from readers prior to our publishing this (and still none from your address that I can see in my tips box -- keep in mind, also, that posts are often queued for a while before they go live). I was notified by a professional colleague as well as by my "watch this page" alert at about 11am (on my blackberry, while I was in a cab) and I had the post typed up at about 12:15.
I do see there was a tip that came after that from "zx," but the post was already published when that came in.
So, "zx" - there was no slight intended - thanks for looking out for us anyway :) we always appreciate the tips and we generously thank tipsters whenever and wherever possible.
question for you guys...
I have been working an admin at a new'ish job for about a year now, all the desktops are macs (my servers are linux) and i have not had a single problem with any of the desktops. Being relativity new to the mac in the workplace scheme, is this product something i should get? Has my complete lack of issues been a fluke?
Also, you can pay an extra $50 for the downloaded software but it will not start up your computer since it does not include any System files. You can try to create a bootable CD using a utility called "CloneX". but ASSOFT doesn't support it.
so your options are:
Alternate Startup Disk or Target Disk Mode.
enjoy,
zx
you should at-least give credit to the guy who sent you the news tip;)
