Kensington discontinues Iridio mice
I love my Iridio. It is, if I am remembering correctly, my third Irideo in a row. It's small enough to fit my hand. It's Mac friendly. It has two buttons and it has a scroll wheel. It is, in other words, nearly a perfect mouse. Other than the fact that after about a year its USB bits die.
And now it's discontinued. I called up Kensington for tech support because it started having some USB problems (as did the previous 2, which I replaced on my own penny) and the technician told me they'd permanently discontinued the line. They sent out a Si300 laser mouse to replace it, but it's a honking big old thing that's far too large for me to use.
I went over to CompUSA to see if they had any Irideos left, but they were all sold out. I ordered a couple on Amazon, but they (Ritz Camera, actually, through Amazon) cancelled my order because they were out of stock. I just don't want to say goodbye to what is otherwise the most perfect Mac mouse ever.
So do any of you TUAW readers have any recommendations for a replacement? I'm looking for a sealed USB laser mouse with approximately the same dimensions that can comfortably fit into a small woman's hand. Thanks in advance for any hints.

yea what the heck. I am still using mice from like 1989 from a mac se. If you have to replace a mouse like ever, then its junk.

The new ones don't have a scroll wheel, but the company does make a 2-button scroll-wheel mouse (Unimouse), that may meet your needs:

I think it only comes in one size.
Currently, I use a Kensington Studio Mouse, which (though small) works very well for my large hands. I had one die recently, after 18 months or so, and the company sent out a new one, no questions asked. Great service!

Other than the fact that it's complete garbage, it's great? You should get more than 1 year of use out of a mouse.
I'm with 18/Daniel on this one. My Yr2000 Microsoft Optical IntelliMouse is going strong after 6 years - no cleaning required, comfortable in the hand unlike any Apple mouse, no drivers required for 4 button operation etc etc

It's since been rebranded as the iceMouseJR but I assume that the quality is the same:

Erica - I actually have an Iridio that I purchased about 6 months ago and have never used. After receiving it I found that it was just too small for me and it's been sitting in a box since then. If you'd like it feel free to email me at the gmail address I've entered in this comment and I'd be happy to send it to you.

i dont know if that will help
but here in Egypt there is a lot of cheap chinese ripoffs of this mouse
same shape, size nad colour
I'm not sure what you mean by "USB bits going bad" but I'm willing to bet that the mouse is dying because a part is failing. I'm sure you have a few friends who are handy with electronics, why not let one of them take a stab at identifying the failing component and replacing it with a simple and cheap order from digikey. Thy may even be able to revive your other three, assuming you keep broken mice.
December 14 2006 at 7:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe Logitech V150 and V450 are both small laser mice -- the 150 is corded, the 450 is cordless. I really wish they made a laser version of the V200/V270 series...
