Tables 1.1 - Spreadsheet for Mac

Those of you who are tired of waiting for a Universal Binary of Excel and need a basic spreadsheet should check out Tables. It's a relatively new Universal Binary spreadsheet for OS X which has just been bumped to version 1.1. It's true, this is far from a real Excel replacement, lacking as it does much of Excel's advanced functionality (e.g. graphing and Macros). However, if you're only doing light number crunching then Tables might be just the trick. It is a nice looking program, but IMO entirely too expensive at € 39 (~$52).

I’ve been looking for something to open the occasional Excel files I receive, like an ad contract I just received from a New York magazine. For some reason nothing will open it; when I tried this one, it said the file was password protected and could not open. The publisher told me it’s not password protected. I tried icExcel, Mariner, and this one, and non of them work. Neo Office is the only one that would open it, but the formatting was wacky. I finally had to send it to someone with Excel on a Windows machine to open it for me. Wish this one worked, it’s a nice-looking app I’d be happy to buy.

It wasn't so long ago that 39 euros was more or less equivalent to $39 - but the dollar has fallen in value. Don't blame the developers - they pay for their groceries in euros.

I second the NeoOffice suggestion. It's a Cocoa port of OpenOffice. So it's fully compatible with Excel documents and of course free as in free beer and free as in free speech. http://neooffice.org/

I think Tables is ok if you don't do any heavy duty Excel stuff. That said, Tables opens most of the Excel files at work just fine.
Personally though, I find Mesa suits my needs much better. Developed for NeXT first this feel like a great OS X application with a lot of features.

$50 seems reasonable to me for an Excel replacement.

NeoOffice has an excellent spread sheet that will open and save to Excel documents plus there is an Intel version. I don't use spread sheets very often, so I don't know how close NeoOffice is to Excel. However, the price is right and it works great!

Mariner Calc is also universal binary, and does most of what Excel does...
