Opera 9.1 adds phishing protection

Opera Software's "alternative" web browser, aptly named Opera, hit version 9.10 yesterday. The only new feature of note is the anti-phishing filter they've added, but this release also includes bug fixes aplenty. Opera is still free (although @29 USD will buy you "premium support" via email), it's Universal Binary and you'll need OS X 10.3.9 or later to check it out.

Opera has never "felt" right to me on the Mac, so I rarely turn to it, although I do keep a copy handy in my Apps folder for special occasions. That shouldn't and won't stop you from using it, though. For what it's worth, I do like the Opera Mini browser on my Blackberry.

Hello!
Take Opera's features, put it into OmniWeb's interface, make it free and you have the perfect browser out there. Opera's interface rocks on Windows but sucks on a Mac. We need a native cocoa application. The Opera development team seems highly unconcerned about the Mac department.

@ Mat - it's so nice to have another Saft-devotee on the team :)

Just a sidenote: recent versions of the indispensable Saft (http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/index.html) adds anti-phishing protection to Safari.

Don't get me wrong, I think Opera is a wonderful browser, and the fact that the only thing I could come up with complain about it is the icon is definitely a good thing.

@paul - Try this. Make the Main Bar and drag the buttons you need in there. The Main Bar is always on top of the Bookmark Bar by default.

To make Opera look like the other browsers, check http://www.demuths.de/iopera/

I usually use the Tango CL theme though.

@jon - my workaround is to put the Opera icon just beside Trash separator line. The space on the icon's left and right is looks just about the same in that location.

If the only problem is the icon, that's fine by me (users of many progs with that problem).

Firefox got much better on the Mac with 2.0. Opera got much better on the Mac with 9.0 (where rendering - even in against standards - finally equals the competition). Personally I think Opera is more Mac-like. Firefox though has those extensions (really the only thing bringing me back). And finally the "as you type" spell-checker is better in FF2. Opera is much faster.

My only problem with Opera on the Mac is how the icon looks in the dock. The little shadow on the '0' violates the personal space of the app to the left side of it.

How many versions does Opera have to reach before they allow users to toggle the locations of their navigation and bookmarks toolbars? It's the simple things that keep me from using Opera.
