Revisiting the Rumors: Rebecca Runkle proved right

About a month ago, AppleInsider reported that Morgan Stanley analyst Rebecca Runkle's research note detailed her findings from unnamed inside sources. Her predictions were:
  • 4GB and 8GB models, priced at $599 and $649, although she suggested that a slightly lower list price would be a conservative guess.
  • Full screen 3.5" LCD about 0.4" thick with a virtual click wheel and soft touch design.
  • Metal casing, similar to the nano, in multiple colors.
  • Camera, digital audio playback, video, e-mail and calendar.
  • Most likely carrier: Cingular.

Pretty accurate stuff, wouldn't you say?

Not only isn't there a virtual clickwheel, but there are no gestures that even look vaguely circular. All navigation is done with "flicks" and "pinches".

Take a look at the walkthroughs on Apple's official iPhone pages. So Bart is 100% right - NO SOUP... i mean virtual clickwheel for you!

Anyone else notice that EA are releasing their first games for iPods?

Certainly they'll be here too.

mgkwho-

Jobs didn't say they were including those three things. He was referring to the input device for each of Apples "revolutionary" products.

Mouse = Mac
Click wheel = iPod
Multitouch = iPhone

No virtual clickwheel, sorry.

Yep. It kinda looks like the Flamingo, but also looks somewhat like a oversized Apple earbud without the wire and in black.

Ante Vukorepa-

The virtual touchwheel is built into the fact that the whole screen is touch sensitive.

I'm sure there is a gesture to treat it like a scroll wheel. They wouldn't want to abandon it just yet. Remember, Jobs proclaimed three technologies built into the thing: a mouse, click wheel, and multi-touch.

What was that second thing?

Oh, yeah. A click wheel.

Sounds like a virtual click wheel to me.

josh, watch the keynote. It's a really small device that hangs from your ear.

Did anyone else notice that Apple mentions an Apple-designed bluetooth headset on their iPhone sight? From the iPhone "high-tech" wireless section:

"and Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR, which links to Apple’s new, remarkably compact Bluetooth headset."

Where are the pictures of this?

Not that accurate, actually.
I'm sure it looks pretty accurate in hindsight, but let's break things down for a moment here...

+1 4 GB, 8 GB
-1 price (wrong, vague)
+1 screen
+1 thickness
-1 virtual click wheel
-1 soft touch
-1 metal casing similar to nano
-1 multiple colors
0 camera, playback, video, email, calendar (find me a phone that don't do those)
+1 most likely carrier
--------
TOTAL: -1

Not much of a score, eh? :)
