AppleTV requires iTunes 7.1
We may be living in a 7.0.2 world, but AppleTV seems destined for an iTunes 7.1 one. Eagle eyed TUAW reader Chris Hileman points us to evidence of iTunes 7.1's imminent release. Pop over to the AppleTV specs page and check out the system requirements. Along with Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later and Win XP SP2, you'll find iTunes 7.1. Since AppleTV will be released sometime next month, maybe we can look forward to an iTunes upgrade as well.

Im just going to take a guess that a majority of the update will be Apple TV related and mean nothing to us Zenith CRT zombies.

I sure hope iTunes 7.1 increases it video organization abilities. I love how it separates Music, Tv, and Movies. But i reallly love how movies are organized in DVDpedia.

I have a suspicion that this will all be sorted out with a "One More Thing" event within the next month or so...
The announcement could include information about HD content available from the new iTunes 7.1. Why else would the AppleTV have all that glorious HD capability and no (legal) way to feed it HD content (other than trailers)?

It should be expected that a new version of iTunes will be nescessary to integrate the Apple TV with it. Obviously, iTunes 7.0.2 doesn't have Apple TV support, so they need to have another release for support.

The bigger question I have (which I haven't seen addressed anywhere) is will the Apple TV count against one of my iTunes "authorized" computers. I'm already dangerously close to the magic number (5). I hate the idea that I may already be tapped out on where I can play the music/tv/movies that I paid good money for.

I think the new version will add, most of all, a new Quicktime export setting, to push out those 1280x720 Main Profile (gosh!!, say 4GB for a well compressed movie!). In a month or two, Popcorn and others will support that new profile. I only wish they stick with older profiles, I'd really like to have one portable copy, for ipod, and one HD copy, for AppleTV, without tweaking too much with settings. AFAIK, I cannot "automatically" push out 320x240 video for iPod from current version of QT.

You say AppleTV / iTV requires iTunes 7.1. Who cares what version of iTunes it requires. It requires that there are movies available. This moment outside the US no movies available. In Netherlands there are even no music video's available. When is Apple going to release movies to the rest of the world? Why are there some EU countries (UK) that has music video's and other countries haven't. I hope Apple moves into politics and solves this issue soon. They are quick to have AppleTV on sales world-wide. But hardware needs software. Period.
