TUAW Show Floor Showoff: OWC's ModBook

There wasn't too much that was truly new and exciting on the Macworld Expo showfloor this year. Don't get me wrong, there was a ton of neat stuff but nothing huge. Nothing that is, other than the ModBook. We've covered it before, and now we have a video tour of the hottest item (other than the iPhone) on the showfloor. A little birdie tells me that OWC got lots of preorders for this baby, and I know their booth was packed for most of the Expo.

Update: Some folks are complaining about the Netscape player, and the video quality. For all of these videos, if you head over to the Netscape page you can download the video in iPod format, or the original uploaded version. Here is the iPod version, and here is the original version (.mov) of this particular interview.

Are there any insights on screen resolution for using a MacBook with Ubuntu in Paralleles?

This was a very impressive demo. I have just loaded Windows XP and Ubuntu onto my MacBook, too. Could you possibly tell me how to get Ubuntu to recognize the MacBook's screen resolution?

Thanks for the proof that it can be done.

#56,

By your line of reasoning then, I suppose we should all be blasting Steve Jobs too. Case in point: "Oh-to-matic", "Jag-wire"... et al.

Sheesh, get a life, people.

d8 (poster #13),

I can answer at least the "two iSights" part of your post. Sorta. I have a MacBook Pro that I use both at home and on the go. When at home, it is "docked" to a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse and a 19" Viewsonic LCD, as well as a FireWire iSight camera. Of course this means that I operate the MacBook Pro with the lid closed while at home. In this case, any software that uses the isight automatically switches to the FireWire iSight, with no special settings needed. (I have tested this with iChat, PhotoBooth, and Delicious Library.)

Um, he's the CEO of Otherworld and he calls it OS Ex? Seriously. We are to take him seriously when he doesn't even know the name of the OS running on his product?

It's bad enough when my friends say it but when a leader in the industry pronounces it wrong, that just drives me insane.

Thanks for understanding
The top half is a structural frame of Magnesium
If it were to be powder coated the acids from your hands in time would corrode the finish
Also now there is no concern of chipping or scratching
The unit should be available with a black bottom if enough people request it from OWC
Some people were talking about a company the paints MacBooks so you could get the bottom painted to match the top

Andrew
It’s a pleasure to answer your questions
Inkwell does allow you to enter text in any field
In a couple of ways
There is a window that you can write in and then send the text to the front most application
You can configure inkwell to do this automatically
Or you can use write any where
This has an expanding yellow page that you write on, once done it will likewise send the text to the waiting application
All of this works pretty well
The only problem is in some trouble shooting situations and user log on where the on screen keyboard is not supported
Apple has an on screen keyboard built into the OS so 10.5 might support this
To tell you the truth it is the same problem on the PC side some things need a keyboard to function

As far as the sales questions that is all handled by OWC I'm friends with the Axiotron folks

Hope this helps

I thought it was pronounced OS 10, not OS X.

The Netscape player is pretty unusable on my Powerbook G4. So choppy, the picture hardly moves, frame rate next to nothing, and the audio cuts out every second. Have no problem with other Flash based stuff like Youtube videos. Please improve or stop using. Thanks.

First of all, as to OS-ten or OS-X, I'm sorry, but whatever is technically "right" or "wrong", people have been using both for some time now. And if it's wrong to say OS-X in your eyes, then you're going to have to contend with the fact that a lot of smart people in the mac community like using OS-X. Theres a lot of developers I've talked with (and including myself) that use OS-X, and a couple of my buddies who work at Apple use OS-X. Its merely a preference, its not a big deal, lets stop that foolishness and talk about something that matters instead.

I just have 2 questions myself, one dealing with that I'm not completely familiar with the Inkwell technology. Does Inkwell work in any given text input area in OSX? So, for instance, I want to go to a web address in Safari, can I just start writing in the Address Bar? I'm just curious because I've yet to see that demo-ed, and I saw the on-screen keyboard during the video. It just seems to me that having to rely on an on-screen keyboard would make the tablet experience more of pain and less practical for quick day-to-day computing.

My second question is, I'm currently a college student meaning I'm eligible for Apple Store discounts, any way that you guys can offer these educational discounts? I mean, I heard mention that the modbook was more of a kit, so it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that you'd be able to have me order the full macbook at educational discount pricing, and then mod it to the modbook. Additionally, any thoughts on having an aftermarket service? So that people who previously purchased a MacBook could "upgrade" to a modbook?

Thanks in advance, and for all the bitching and moaning, the video was fine, the netscape player worked fine on my Powerbook G4, and the point got through with some good questions answered.
