Cookbook progress

Some of you may recall that I served as one of the judges over at My Dream App. The one app that I was most enthused about was Cookbook. It really took the idea of recipe app to the next level, at least the concept did. Cookbook was one of the winners, and it seems that there is now a functioning version of the app (no, you can't download it yet). Check out this progress post to get a taste (ha! Get it?) of the development process.

Keep in mind that this is still a *very* preliminary build of Cookbook that you're seeing. There are many more features that'll be going into the app as things progress.
In addition, the graphics are far from what'll be in the final version. These were quickly done just to get a sense of the layout and usability modifications that we've been working on for it.

I'm really excited about this. I have shown it to my wife and I look forward to the awesome meals ahead. All while she cooks and I read TUAW.

Just to be devil's advocate, how is this different from MacGourmet? At least, visually speaking.

I'm sorry, but when you get talented, young, motivated developers together and all you come up with is a weather program and a cookbook, something is rotten in Denmark. What happened here? Were is the creativity? Where is the passion?
What a Frakenstein MPA turned out to be. And Portal? Who is going to care when Time Machine comes along with Leopard.
Colour me unimpressed with these two very dull, lifeless programs.

Who said anything about talented? The only thing these guys have been good at is making money. These programs weren't even their idea... where's the talent in that?
And I don't think there was any creativity or passion to begin with... much more than most other small Macintosh developers, they only view these apps as a means to an end: money. They've found a formula that seems to be working for them in charging $15 for 'pretty' apps that are not very difficult to write, so why should they stop now?

Thanks for digging up bad memories as to how a freakin cookbook and file syncing app won this contest when genuinely useful and innovative things like Hijack lost out. Here's a tip, if you can't wait for Cookbook to be released goto one of the many website recipes sites that have online recipe tracking or print out the recipes on some notecards. There I just saved you a lot of development.
