Rogue Amoeba offers teaser and sign-up to test new mystery app

Oh Paul Kafasis, you clever Rogue Amoeba. What with your two-punch post of a teaser and sign-up offer for a new mystery app dubbed "AHT." What could this new app from the makers of Audio Hijack, Fission, Nicecast and Airfoil be? Is AHT simply a code name, or an acronym? Will AHT complement Rogue Amoeba's presence in the audio space, or will it be some new venture into RSS, video or even GTD? No one knows yet, but Paul said they'll be picking their first pool of testers on Wednesday, February 28th, so head on over and toss your name into the hat to test what I'm sure will be an excellent new offering from one of Mac OS X's much-respected 3rd parties.

[Update: Rogue Amoeba has filled their list of testers for now, so the submission form has been closed.]

I, too, thought that Rogue Ameoba was "above" this type of hype.
What happened to not playing these games?
"Guess what it is!!"
Even if it was only on your *public* blog, you are still playing.
So much for spitting on the other software folks who enjoyed similar "buzz" in the past (e.g., MacHeist, MacZot, Delicious), eh?

RLH: I don't generally make a habit of commenting outside our own communications, but I will here. To be clear, we posted this on our own weblog, and nowhere else. AHT will be an audio product, and our existing customers are just the type of people who should test it.

While we did post publicly, this was never designed to go out to the outside world. We didn't ask TUAW or anyone else to publish it. While buzz is certainly a good thing, that's not our aim here at all. We prefer to market the application when it's actually available for use and purchase.

Color me cynical, but I view this as a publicity stunt. With nothing more than a codename, why would I sign up to beta test? I would expect a reputable developer to seek beta testers who would really be able to put an app through its paces. For me, if it's an audio or media app I'll never use it (other than play with the shiny buttons) so they aren't going get meaningful feedback. OTOH, if it's for GTD I might be able to stress it pretty hard.

So they generate some buzz, get a long list of "testers", those testers blog "secret sneak peeks", more buzz is generated, ...

Wow, these guys are geniuses!
