iTunes: Free Monday
With all the WWDC excitement last week, it took longer than usual for me to get around to the Japanese free Single of the Week. My apologies. In related iTunes news, TUAW reader Sejuru writes in to tell us that Yahoo!Japan seems to be promoting iTunes pretty heavily these days. To give some context, Sejuru writes, Yahoo! has a very high profile in Japan, dominating the online auction market in Japan, the same market where eBay crashed and burned.

Joe, you cannot download a freebie from a store that you don't have an account for. If you only have a US iTS account, you won't be able to download the freebies from Japan's iTunes Store (or Australia's, or England's etc).
However, it is not difficult to get an account on a store from another nation - all you need is an iTunes Gift Card from that nation. For instance, you can buy a Japanese iTunes Gift card from J-List.
To use the card to create an account, do this - Open iTunes, go to the Store, select Japan (日本) from the "My Store" pop-up menu at the bottom of the page, and check that you are not signed into an account (there should be a "sign in" button on the right above the store screen).
Then hit the "Redeem" link. Enter your gift card's code, and you will then have an opportunity to create your account. Select "None" as the payment option if you don't have (or don't want to use) a credit card.
You will now have the gift card's value worth of credit on the Japanese store, and more importantly, you'll have a Japanese iTunes account so you can download all their freebies.

JBOX.com (disclaimer: my site) does sell iTunes prepaid cards for the J-store. There are instructions for making an account tied to the prepaid card number that doesn't require a credit card here. You can buy the cheapest card once and after that you'll have the account to get the free tunes.

I think fair disclosure demands that somebody (me!) mention that the site listed by the first poster VanillaSpice is in fact run and operated by the second poster, Peter Payne, although he mentions one of his other URLs by name instead.
Nothing nefarious implied. It just should be noted.
