iPhone Tip: Don't even bother with the .com button

While typing on the iPhone is an arguably difficult / easy process depending on who you are, I figured out a handy tip for saving at least one button press - as long as you're going to a .com site. Just like a real browser, it appears that the iPhone will allow you to type in most .com URLs without having to type the actual .com or pressing the button. Simply press Go after typing the site name and MobileSafari should automatically insert the .com for you. It's worked in every site I've tried so far at least. A mere savings of one button press to be sure, but in my opinion, shaving off even one repeated key press can amount to a lot of saved time after a while.

Yea i do it all the time in standard safari. I just type tuaw, and I'm there. Faster than bookmarks.

truth be told, that second you save not hitting the button more often than not will cost you two or more in the time it takes to resolve- not necessarily a timesaver...

Oh the irony...
I had already figured out this "trick" on my iPhone from having done it for years on my Mac. The funny thing is, the first site I visited on my phone (amctheaters.com) AFTER reading this post didn't work! Every other site has worked with no problems, but not this one. Of course, now that I've visited it once, it will work fine from now on. Oh and Mark, this little trick actually does work for some major .org sites. Try Wikipedia and see what happens!

Maybe, but .com isn't just for the US - everyone uses it.

Matt H., the problem with your argument is that almost nobody uses .us, the US is different like that. However, a lot of domains do use .fr, .co.uk, .de, etc. in their respective countries.

Its a common browser feature. It has to do with the DNS service you are getting. The dns actually takes the text and finds the real site. Some DNS's are better and will auto adjust missing url postfixes and even typos in some cases. Opendns does both, I think.

"5. hmm.
i wonder if the german/french/uk (translated) version of the iphone will have .de .fr and .co.uk instead of the .com button..."

Err no. Otherwise the current iPhone would have .us....

Another side of this tip nobody has mentioned yet is that if the ".com" button is unnecessary, then perhaps Apple should put something else there. Something people really will use, often. Not being an iPhone user (yet) myself, I cannot suggest what that should be, but I'm sure those of you who've been using that little virtual keyboard for a month can come up with some quick ideas of what your favorite missing key is.

9 & 14: YMMV: I just put in "apple" and was taken to http://www.apple.com right away.

10: Again, it worked for me. Never been to Digg, but just entering that took me to the site.

Not an earth-shattering bit of advice, but useful for some. In any event, fanboys have to recognize that all this attention on a new device is going to bring out the haters. Can't be helped; best ignored.
