Liveblogging the iPhone 1.0.1 update

The new iPhone 1.0.1 update just hit iTunes. TUAW is here to keep you informed about what that update means to you--as a normal user and/or as a hacker. Here's the dish we've learned about, what we're speculating about and what we know for a fact.
What's going on? Apple has just released the iPhone 1.0.1 update via iTunes.
What does this update do? It looks like Safari is the target of most of the updates, probably patching security holes. Apple's official update details are here.
Are there any obvious differences between v.1.0 and v.1.1? Apparently not. Other than the people failing to steal your passwords and stuff like that. TUAW Reader Robert Boyle comments: "Option to BCC yourself, mail is much faster. Messages load instantly. Yahoo push mail is swift."
What if I modded my iPhone? The update apparently wipes out the entire mod. Apple is not being kind or forgiving to the iPhone modders.
I didn't do anything illicit or snazzy? What about me? Looks like if you haven't modded your phone you'll be in fine shape. Pictures and most other synced data are untouched according to reports but you may lose your SMS messages when you do a full restore.
Can I still Jailbreak to open the file system and access everything? Reports are rolling in that yes, jailbreak will work under certain circumstances albeit with some limitations. Details to follow.
Details? Things are still a bit fuzzy, but it seems to involve putting the new dmg files in phonedmg just like you did the first time 'round with 1.0.
How do I decrypt the new iPhone 1.0.1 firmware image? Funny you should ask. Details right here on Nate True's fabulous site.
How can I get my decrypt key? Look here for some additional help.
Same password or different on the update dmgs? Looks like...different
Where's the firmware? Link right here. Or look in ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates on your computer.
Do you have some basic steps? Yes: Update with 1.0.1, unpack into phonedmg (according to previous jailbreak instructions), run jailbreak. Unpack the 1.0 restore image to phonedmg, rejailbreak, and (according to CmputrAce and Harro), iphoneinterface will start working again.
So, Sadun, you going to try this out? Well...okay. Here goes nothing. I just clicked update. It says it's just going to do "bug fixes". Hah! Here we go. Clicking next...Clicking Agree...woooo. Here we go. Oh great. A couple of minutes in and I've trashed iTunes. It's now prompting me to restore and update. iTunes is downloading the software. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Now it's "Preparing iPhone for restore." I hope iTunes at least buys dinner for the poor iPhone first.
So how's that whole "restore" thing going? Slowly. Verifying now. Soon, my iPhone will be as innocent as a baby. All done and dusted. She's syncing now.
What's that concern about "update"? After you enabled ssh on your iPhone, you probably want to have restored the original "update". Just saying.
What about iFuntastic? Updated to version 2.1.0. BREAKING! In fact, broken open. Just used it to jailbreak my restored iPhone. Still doesn't connect to iphoneinterface so it looks like I'm going to have to do a little massaging.
I really want to know exactly what changed. Do you know where I can find an exact file-by-file size compare? Why, yes!

Updated my iPhone to the 1.0.1 with no issues about 10 minutes, I'm not modded, no non-Apple approved software, sync everyday to my Dell WinXP laptop, nearly full on an 8 gig with 1.2 gig left.
62 Troy Murray - My Visual Voice Mail works just fine, in fact it seems louder on the speakerphone option, but maybe I'm wishing...I also hadn't noticed the "New Voicemail" popup when you missed a called and a person left voicemail, maybe I just didn't notice it before. I called my iPhone from my deskphone to test the visual voice mail.
Not sure if usage did change.
My usage button in settings main menu is 3rd from top under Airplane mode and Wi-Fi.
On the usage menu reading down the screen: usage, standby then current period, lifetime then sent, received then finally a Reset Statistics button.
My passcode lock times. Settings->General->Auto-Lock say 1,2,3,4,5,never. I don't see the 30,60,90 etc as reported.
Edge and Mail overall seem faster.
I haven't crashed the iPhone for the last 8 hours of usage, which is pretty good, I average about 1 crash every day.
My sometimes iPhone not showing up in iTunes when plugged into the USB/30pin connector cable seems to have gone away as well.
Apple ToDos still left:
3G network
Saving email attachments
Video Out
Voice dialing
More apps
Wonderful phone! (and I'm a die-hard windows guy)

Updated MMS? The iPhone only has SMS.
So what are the "enhanced" features of _SMS_ then?

I think it's fair to say that Apple snuck in some unadvertised improvements; for example, my Griffin iTrip Auto now works with the iPhone, which makes me a very happy man.

Interesting. All of the noticeable changes mentioned above didn't apply to my update. Maybe there are different updates in different parts of the country? I confirmed the update was installed, but I don't have any new options on the lock feature, and "usage" in settings didn't move to the top for me. I didn't do any modifications or ringtones. Strange. Any insight?

Can I just remind people that the term "bricked" means your phone is completely unusable? If you were able to restore your phone, you should say it was bricked. Sorry to nitpick.
I love the new lock options.

After the iPhone 1.0.1 update, Yahoo Mail Inbox and Sent folders do not want to sync anymore. The other folders, such as Trash, Draft, and Bulk Mail sync fine. The 'Checking for Mail...' line stays at the bottom of the screen for ages.
All this worked flawlessly before the 1.0.1 update.
Anyone seeing the same problem?

I saw some posts that indicated people "felt" that their phones got louder after the update. Being the geek that i am, out came my trusty Radio Scrap sound level meter.
I put the meter right to the earpiece with the max volume set and repetitively got 84-86db on a ring of another line. Once I ran the 1.0.1 update, the volume went up to 92-93db. That's about a 6-8db volume improvement.
So, no more guessing or gut feelings... Both the earpiece volume and the speakerphone got louder. While 6-8db isn't a huge change, I always felt my phone was just a bit too quiet at max volume when i was in my car. Now all is well. Thank you Steve!
I haven't played with Safari much, but if it really is more stable, that really is a welcome change.

I've noticed since updating that my podcast lineup is different (no music currently installed). There's a Shuffle option at the top of the lineup. And the programs are listed sequentially by date instead of alphabetically by day -- much better for listening in order.
I've also noticed a little blue arrow pointing right at the top of the screen, next to the Bluetooth and battery icons. It's blue in email, white everywhere else WHEN it's on. I THINK it's an outgoing mail indicator.

I had modded my phone to add ringtones and the update went smoothly; the only thing had to do was reenter my email passwords; everything else restored completely, including SMS. Unfortunately, I haven't found away to re-mod my phone for my ringtones and the built in ones are, well, lame ... anyone found a way to mod after 1.01 (and unfortunatley, I don't have access to a mac :(

It is now able to find IMAP subfolders on its own, without needing to specify an IMAP Path Prefix in Settings. Subsequently, it fixes the bug where messages sent from outside the Mail application were uploaded to a INBOX.INBOX.Sent/ subfolder instead of INBOX.Sent.
I tested it by emailing a photo through the Photos app and also by sending a URL through Safari's Share button and the sent messages are both now properly showing in my IMAP sent folder.

After applying the 1.0.1 update and synching, I lost 2 Outlook recurring events. I think it was because they started earlier than 30 days ago and the Do not sync events older than 30 days was checked. Otherwise no problem with the update, contacts and photos fine.
