Apple has spent $720k on lobbying this year
Though it's small change by Washington standards, apparently Apple has dropped $720,000 so far this year greasing palms in DC, er,... I mean participating with civic-minded zeal in our representative democracy. Actually, their pet projects have included lobbying for much needed patent law reform as well as money for tech education and tax breaks on R&D spending. It's hard to get the most current numbers, but tech companying lobbying has been growing steadily for years (including from Apple). Microsoft, as you might expect, is way out in front.

By the way, and apropos very little, let's note that switcheurs (comprising the vast majority of TUAW's staff and readership, it seems) tend to be reactionary folk, much more so than longtime Mac users--and that's including the likes of Limbaugh. Even Steve himself acknowledges this as plain truth in speculating whether there are any Republicans among real Mac users: "Maybe a little less" than half, he says, "maybe more Dell than ours."

My biggest pet political peeve is the power that cell phone companies have over consumers and how it limits innovation and competition. Number portability was a big part of this, but there's still a lot more that needs to be done, mainly to separate control of phones from the network carriers. I've never thought of it before, but I wonder if Apple could be the driving force that could push to make the cell industry more open and competitive. It certainly would be in their best interests.
