Toyota released iPod integration kit
I guess this is the weekend of Apple car news. Leftlanenews is reporting that Toyota is finally shipping the iPod integration kit they announced earlier this year for current Toyota and Lexus cars. Much like the kits from VW, BMW, and others, it allows you to plug your iPod into your car via a Dock connector cable in the glovebox. Naturally you can control your tunes from the head unit (or steering wheel) and track information is displayed on the head unit display. It runs $300, presumably from dealers, and it takes about an hour for it to be installed.

You didn't mention Scion, which already had a full iPod integration upgrade through the Dock connector -- which for the '08s became the standard. In fact, with the '08s, there's even an upgrade to an even more advanced Pioneer system that works flawlessly. I couldn't be happier, yet no one gives Scion their props for it.

I've bought it already in Italy for my Toyota Corolla Verso (sounds strange it was already released it Italy, I know).
It's absolutely not worth the price: you can't select tracks you like. If you have a 40 GB library, you can only skip tracks 'til you find the one you wanna listen to. You can't search by artists, albums or anything else. You could create some playlist to include your favourite tracks (but not too much or it will be impossible to find the playlist you were looking for.)

Yes, Scion is part of Toyota, but I'm saying they've had the integration for years... Toyota is just starting to get it as it says here. And the Scion version absolutely does have full navigation and selectable tracks, playlists, everything. My girlfriend's Miata has none of that with the Mazda "iPod" stereo, so I understand Luca's frustration.

I have an 08 Scion and the iPod integration works swimmingly. Yes I said swimmingly. Also it works with the iPhone but you just have to say no to the "Turn on airplane mode" message.

Why on earth does it cost so much? That's more than buying a new head unit from a third party that lets you plug in thumbdrives or something.

A good portion of that cost is likely labor. The Honda version is about the same price to install, but the hardware alone is something like $175.
The Honda version is also weak sauce, with no real UI on my lovely navi touch-screen and some really poorly done speech synthesized navigation. I suppose someone thought it would be safe (eyes on the road), but it is also lame.

what is the part number? Some of us are inclined enough to self install.

Toyota has already announced the release of an iPod interface for '08.
It is dealer installed - you just connect your iPod to a cable in your glove box.
All the iPod generations are supported, incl'd iPhone! (except for the 1st-3rd generations which were firewire).
My 'source' tells me the part number is
# PT545-00082
