NBC shows leave iTunes but join Amazon's Unbox

Here's a quick recap of the NBC/Apple tussle, for those who are tuning in late:
  1. NBC says Apple is mean and won't renew their contract ('These shows are my toys and I'm going home!').
  2. Apple says NBC is a stupidhead, and NBC's shiny new shows won't be available in iTunes ('How are those toys now? Taste a little better with the salt from your tears, NBC?').
  3. NBC and Amazon become BFF's. NBC no longer makes eye contact with Apple when they meet in the hallway between classes.
That's right, NBC's upcoming season of shows may not be available via iTunes (pending contract negotiations), but they will be available at Amazon Unbox. What's Amazon Unbox you ask? It is ok not to recognize it, since few people actually use it (and even fewer Mac users, since it is PC only). Unbox is Amazon's video download service that allows you to rent or buy movies and tv shows which you can then play back on authorized devices (rentals can play back on one device, while the things you buy can be played on two computers and two portable devices but no iPods since they aren't supported).

NBC went with Amazon, reports the New York Times, because Amazon agreed to be flexible with pricing. This translates to higher prices for more recent shows, with the back catalog being cheaper (which is what I assume NBC wanted Apple to do all along). Amazon Unbox will also offer up free previews of NBC's upcoming shows, as well as a discount for people buying whole seasons worth of shows (does any of this sound familiar?).

The coolest part of all this is that you can download these shows to your Tivo, though if you have a Tivo why wouldn't you just set it to record these NBC shows for free, like Nik suggests?

duscrom needs a good banning right now. Not just for the juvenile vulgarity (indicative of a small mind), but for the offensively poor understanding of word capitalization. :)

NBC's suits are out of touch. They don't understand that the market has changed and they no longer have the upper hand. They used to be the only place to get video entertainment. They never dealt well with the increased competition from cable and satellite TV. They were still reeling from the Tivo revolution and YouTube and now this. Leaving the iTunes store and charging more for their content with crappier DRM isn't gonna fly. Some poor schmucks may use unbox or whatever other crap service NBC puts out, but the great majority will simply get it free on YouTube or with BitTorrent. The idea that NBC left iTunes because of piracy problems is inane. They left because they are greedy bastards and they think that they can force their customers to pay more. Guess what greedtards, you are wrong and you are going to find out just how wrong you are very soon and it will hurt. A lot. The paradigm has changed. You can’t heal this self-inflicted wound by squirting out another Law and Order clone. You had one chance to grab a hand hold in the new market and you blew it. Nice knowing ya NBC.

Bitter, Maybe, Troll, no. Again, I'm against Monopolies. iTunes is the biggest online retailer, yes.. and is compatible with ONE DMP. Hardware sells Content which sells Hardware.. all coming from the same stable. I have iTunes content, and i have to lose quality, or in the case of video compatibility with much of my other non-Apple appliances. like Xbox 360, PS3, PSP.. and my Sansa MP3 player.

Sure I'm bitter, because I don't see the need of spending $250 on something I can pay as much or if not less for, and get a bigger screen, more features, more codecs, and more choices. (I like subscription services) Now that may all change in 3 hours... But as of this moment, the iPod isn't the best machine on the market. It's merely the most popular.. and if you think "popular" and "quality" go together, remember, Windows is the most popular OS, Internet Explorer 6 is the most popular web browser, and the High School Musical 2 soundtrack is the best selling album on iTunes... and I'm sorry but that iPod Nano was a PoS, espically after owning a Zune (Not that great either) for a few weeks.

I'm bitter for the fact that I love My MacBook, but I'm feeling that I'm confined to apple's confined and pricey playground. But it's like Sodomy, If you like it, it's not considered rape... but either way, your still getting fucked in the ass.

The TV shows on Amazon unbox will NOT play on the Zune - it is not a plays for sure device. Funny, huh?

Let's also not forget that NBC was looking for tighter DRM and found it w/ Amazon.

NBC is a bunch of losers!!

NBC is stubborn though. I don't think they'd want to admit they made a mistake until the last possible minute, which means they will probably shop it EVERYWHERE before going back to Apple.

duscrom:
Ignorance must be bliss for you. You make no sense with your comment in #10. Let's take a closer look. "I'm against monopolies". Dude, do you even know the definition of a monopoly? If this were one, then you are actually blowing the horn FOR it since Amazon Unbox would be the SOLE provider of that service.

"I'm against dealing with Uninformed people who think that iPods are different from MP3 players.." Hello??? They are different from other MP3 player, just as those are different than iPods. -DUH-

"Simply put I won't be a sheep." Owning a Windows computer qualifies you as being a sheep, merrily bleating along, happily kowtowing to daaaaady Bill Gates' every whim..

NBC was just trying to get greedy, plain and simple. They went with Apple to begin with knowing that would reach the greatest amount of potential customers. They were fine with the original pricing, life was good, the customer base had grown, then greed settled in. Trying to be the bully, they attempted to push Apple into changing it's pricing structure to US, THE CONSUMERS. Apple pushed back and here we are. The bully left the playground and spoke of all the sales they had and how Amazon could make more $$$ if they agreed to NBC's flexible pricing structure. More $$$ for NBC, more $$$ for Amazon, more $$$ the consumer has to spend. Not going to happen, period, OR, in your perfect world, sales will rocket to new heights, Sandisk, Creative, and Microsoft can't keep up with demand for their players, and Apple's iTunes closes it's door because of the competion....

@10 umm hello, they are better, that's why everyone owns one.

I already tried the Microsoft DRM and Napster to Go and Rhapsody to Go and Windows Media Player... and I can tell you straight up... The iPod IS better, easier, more reliable... and 100 more adjectives for the "better."

Obviously you don't own one.

"On top of that NBC makes actual profit from DVDs instead of Apple getting most of the money"

duscrom,

This is most certainly UNTRUE. I know of organizations that sell media through iTunes, and Apple takes a very small sliver off of the top. In fact, it's well known that Apple really doesn't make a lot of money from iTunes- it's their hardware (Macs, iPods) that makes their money. Check your facts before you post more nonsense.

I can only imagine that some people might have started some mass downloading at the news of the split. What happens if people had downloads in transit?
