How do you sync multiple Macs?

Merlin Mann at 43Folders wants to know how you keep your Macs in sync (other than dot Mac, of course. That's the obvious choice).

Are you using a custom-built solution, commercial products or a combination? I use this combination:
  1. iDisk for files. Any "reference" material I may want access to - documents for a project, receipts, confirmation emails, etc. - live on my iDisk. I've created a folder called "Reference," which in turn contains 26 sub-folders, labeled "A" through "Z" for simple alphabetical filing.
  2. Google Firefox browser sync handles my web bookmark synchronization. It's worked flawlessly since day one, which is a lot more than I can say for .Mac bookmark sync. All that's required is Firefox and a few minutes time for the initial upload to Google's servers.
  3. Highrise by 37signals manages my contact information, as well as conversations I want to save or that need follow-up. It's a terrific tool.

tnx egw, i wished i could keep on using gmail, but i should probably forward my gmail into an imap account...

I have been using Subversion for synch'ing all my documents over XP, Linux and OSX machines. As a bonus you get version management.
All the platforms now have a nice front-ends (Turtoise, KDESVN and svnX), but you can use scripts as well.

I've been using SyncTogether to sync Mail settings (not messages), iCal, Address Book, Safari bookmarks. It doesn't sync folders, however.

It works very well for what it does sync. I'm considering a network drive (NAS) to have one source for documents, iTunes, etc.

rsync via command line, or better to say RUnit for easy running of unix commands

sirio, all you need exactly for what you say is an IMAP email account. As for the initial question, I don't have any "magic" and definitive method, I can just second the opinion of a previous poster on why should it be so difficult rather than just working...

I use Unison -

- to synch everything - e-mail, browser stuff, documents, iCal, iTunes, iPhotos, Address Book, the works. It works across all platforms, it works via ssh (so you can sync over the Internet), it is free, and it has changed the way I work with my two computers.

Address-o-sync is a useful app for syncing your addressbook within the same network. The developers seem quite cool.

I use a LaCie portable disk for data. Plaxo for contacts & calendar + Foxmarks for my bookmarks.

I use unison for syncing almost everything between my laptop and a desktop at work that serves as backup and number crunching machine: files, mail, contacts, smart folders, calendars. Marco Polo is used to detect my network settings and fires up unison automatically when dock my laptop at work.
