Make your old iPod's UI look like an iPod Classic

Apple uses new features and UI enhancements that are only available in the current generation of iPods as a carrot to get people to upgrade to the newest model. The new UI on the iPod Classics is a great example. These features could have been placed on the previous generation of iPods with a firmware update, but Apple decided not to do that. as they have for most of the iPod's history (which is their right, of course).

Some eager hackers have modded the 5th gen iPod's firmware to make it look more like the iPod Classic's. If you're jonsing for split screen navigation but don't want to pony up for cash for a new iPod this is for you.

Keep in mind, though, that this entails changing the firmware that is currently on your iPod (which is Apple approved, the firmware that is, not replacing it) to something that was modified by a third party. Bad things could happen (though they could just as equally not ) so be prepared to deal with the consequences should the process run amok.

Thanks, Kai Cherry.

alterPod for mac
-download and install alterPod
-download the file from the link *5(or5.5)th Generation* to the desktop
-open alterPod
-make sure you set "enable disk use" and "manually manage songs" in iTunes
-quit iTunes
-in alterPod go to Firmware: Choose
-select desktop>Classic...R..> iPod Classic for 5G (or 5.5G) and choose it
this should appear as a lined grey box with a green "exec" in the upper left
-in the alterPod window click Restore
wait for your firmware to update

I myself got the apple reboot cycle, so I don't know if I missed something or if its just a bug. but from what i understand that should work if you dont have any songs you actually bought from iTunes. hope that helps anyone who was as frustrated as I was. Also, since I keep getting the reboot, if anyone sees that i did something wrong please tell me. Thanks.

What kind of set up do you have? I used a 5G (original) 30gig, "updated" using alterPod on an Intel MacBook. Has anyone else managed to get a similar set-up working with DRMed iTunes songs and videos? Just to clarify, the new firmware works perfectly as long as I only have unprotected items, such as CD rips and iTunes Plus. If I try to put anything with FairPlay on the iPod, it runs into the infinite-boot problem. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on to it.

Having the same problem with the new firmware unable to play items purchased from the iTunes store (unable to even start when those songs/videos are loaded). I'm trying this on a 5G. Any suggestions?

I too would like a tutorial on how to do this on Windows.

Nevermind about the tutorial on 40. I can get it to work through alterpod, but only directly after I restore (because of the boot cycle) it and there are no songs/videos/etc. on it. After it is synced with iTunes, keeping the same settings and enable disk use, the reboot cycle is started all over again. I suspect this is the same problem as #38. Any help/comments would be appreciated.
