Apple raises Leopard Academic price

One of the many benefits to working in Higher Ed (as I do), or being a student (other than all that book learnin') is Academically Priced software. Many software vendors offer up their products that significantly lower prices for people in the academic circle. Apple has long done this, but it seems they have adjusted their pricing. Tiger cost a mere $79 with the academic discount, but sadly that steep discount it gone.

Numerous readers have emailed us the new academic price for Leopard: $116. That's right, if you're a student Apple understands you have a budget and will gladly knock $13 off the sticker price.

While this price increase is bound to make some folks grumble, Leopard is a pretty sweet deal even at full price.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Update: See this post for the latest news. It boils down to this: the price is higher on Apple's EDU store, but will probably still be cheap in your school's bookstore.

I switched 2 Macs to Linux, student price $0. My reasons - other then the financial ones:

1) Flexibility - I have the source code to everything - no secret Quartz or Adobe magic.

2) Stable support - an operating system is a long term investment - it's just a matter of time before my G3/G4 hardware is unsupported by the vendor.

3) Consistent user interface - Linus has the same look and feel on the G3/G4 as it does on my Acer laptop (Intel chip).

@ sanzzi go to this link... http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

Apple (the big mean company everybody is saying they are) has a Technology Guarantee on the OS. If you bought a Mac on or after Oct 1, 2007, you get a free copy of 10.5 (you pay shipping I think)

@all you pansies out there getting your undies in a wad. get over yourselves. i don't know when you were able to sit in on Apple's board meetings and I wasn't invited, but to assume you have any clue as to why Apple has raised the Edu price is a complete and utter joke.

i too was looking forward to a $70 copy of it, and am disappointed that it isn't there. However, we all knew the OS was coming, why didn't you save your $$ for the big day?!

The last release was April 29, 2005, and 10.3 was 18 months before that.
So for the last 18 months you could have been saving a very simple $7.16 a month and been able to buy you a full priced version without any problem. To assume the discount will always be there, and at the same level is stupid.

Suggestion: if $116 is really that much of a stretch for you then don't buy it, BUT start saving for OS 10.6, which will more than likely be 18 months from now, like all the other releases have averaged out to.

And if I hear one more person complain about the iPhone price drop.... you were willing to pay out the @ss for a phone because it was NEW and FEATURE rich, but when the price dropped you whine because you didn't know it was going to happen. Make up your minds. Prices go up, Apple is bad, prices go down, Apple is bad. Seems to me 90% of you just don't know how to manage your money and make good decisions on when the best time is to buy or not to buy something.

Remember $7.16 a month for the next 18 months will buy you a Retail price version IF THE PRICES DON'T GO UP AGAIN, but at least you'll have most of the money saved up. So skip one McDonalds meal a month and you're set.

regards

Why are you people such whiny bastards? A pack of gum used to cost $.25... Now it costs a dollar--which must mean that the gum maker is ripping people off! dammit, their profit has tripled and I am still short on cash because I spent all my money on booze last weekend!

Erik,
I forgot. By grad school you've graduated to the hard stuff.

Sorry.

@ jose - I'll be buying Leopard, so that's at least one student.

@ krye - Not all students rely on mom and dad, and when you're up to your eyeballs in debt, a few bucks here and a few bucks there can really add up.

@ William Savone - Do you have a link for the $69 retailer pricing? As someone else mentioned, the Apple Store for Education price is easy to find, and it's definitely not $69.

@ Deserthiker - There aren't many keggers in grad school.

Overall, I think Leopard is well worth the full price, and any discount I can get is welcome. However, it doesn't seem to be a smart move on Apple's part to minimize the student discount.

Yes, Apple is out to make a profit, and it's not a charity organization. However, it could easily be argued that $69 for Leopard could lead to more revenue. Higher unit price doesn't always mean higher gross revenue.

It's still a little disappointing when I can buy Leopard from a regular PC(!)-dealer (www.dustin.se) for the same price as Apple's student discount.

What is kinda nice is that iWork, iLife Final Cut Express, Logic Express, and Leopard are now 10% off in the Apple Store for education customers. The license is now the same. There are no academic versions of these apps that cannot be used for business, etc.

No more buying everything but software in the Apple Store!

Michael: Apple has different discounts for different Uni's, some Uni's discount 7% some 30% (that's why you need to visit it though your Uni)

The NUS Store is some sort of special deal they have with NUS, which your only suppose to access with a NUS card, they normally have a better discount. Obviously it's not a real store, so everything must be delivered

"Leopard is a pretty sweet deal even at full price."?? Yeah... I love having to shell out $100+ for marginal updates...what BS. Yet another example of customer unfriendly Apple trying to squeeze out just a few more bucks. Will definitely not be updating my iBook with this.

I live in spain and I'm studying Computer Engineering. I thought it was a joke. Seriously, not only we (meaning europeans students) pay more (a lot more with the current euro-dollar exchange) now we don't even have real discounts we used to have. It's a total rip off. I thought apple cared more about its user base (specially for students). What it's even sadder is that I bought my MacBook Pro on mid September and I won't be eligible for cheap upgrade. I'm really disappointed.
