Instant Jailbreak for iPhone and iPod touch
A crew of hackers (including hdm/metasploit, rezn, dinopio, drudge, kroo, pumpkin, davidc, dunham, and NerveGas) have introduced a one-touch instant jailbreak for both iPhone and iPod touch. The jailbreak opens your iPhone for full disk access and installs Installer.app so you can add pretty much any third party application you like.
To use it, open Safari and point your browser to jailbreakme.com (which we aren't linking to so folks won't install this by accident, but you are prompted to confirm). Once there, read the directions, scroll to the bottom, and tap Install AppSnapp. If Safari disappears and you return to the main Home screen, you're good. Just wait a minute more for your unit to restart--don't touch anything until you see the slide to unlock screen. If Safari hangs, just quit out (press and hold Home for 4-8 seconds) and try again.
Once you get to slide-to-unlock, go ahead and unlock your iPhone or iPod touch. You'll return to your home screen which will contain a new Installer.app icon. If you'll want to ssh into your unit, install the BSD subsystem, Community Sources, and then install Open SSH--you may need to upgrade Installer.app (thanks Ste). With Open SSH and sshfs (part of Mac Fuse), you can open Finder windows that offer direct drag and drop access to your phone or touch.
The jailbreak really is as easy as it sounds. I restored my iPod touch and jailbroke it just a few minutes ago and it worked great.
UPDATE: Please try to do this using WiFi rather than EDGE. Success rates are much higher!

I used ijailbreak fot the touch a couple of days ago ,,,not quite as slick as this but because I don't feel comfortable with code I still recommend it because it includes the iphone apps....I gotta say that the mail app is awesome...really changes the functionality.
apps I have installed so far
all the iphone apps...I love all the iphone apps...however I wish the keyboard would be available in sideways mode in inotes...or any other application for that matter...I can type much fast that way.
community sources 3.0
summerboard(excellent but the ability to rearrage icons on the touch not working yet
iblackjack(cool)
ebook( nice but limited titles right now)
labyrinth(very neat well written game)

BTW I know everyone does not really repeat things here for the newbies but here is the scoop on installing third party apps as I understand it.
Once you have the app installer loaded automatically during jailbreak you will notice a few apps already loaded in the application ready to install. You can ignore most of them for now because they relate to further hacking tools.
The one you want is called community sources 3.0 , click on it then click install. it will do its thing...when it stops click on the home button, wait a few seconds and your touch will do a sodt reboot. unlock and then go back to installer again. now you have tons of third party apps you can install by just clicking on them and repeating the same process.
This is the only way I am comfortable installing third party apps...no code to enter and it is very slick.
Although I don't really understand...I think community sources is a group of applications that have been tested to be safe....they may have bugs but so far they all seem to be at least stable.
One more thing...The first time I tried to jailbreak it messed up...but I was able to just restore in itunes back to virgin and just tried again, It is very nice to know it was that easy. The touch is working great enough not to have to worry about updating anything from apple...however I would like to see a third party app to fix the tiff exploit that made this all possible.

btw...why hasn't anyone written a third party app to enable calendar editing? seems like this still requires entering code to get it to work...which I won't do at this point. anyway if someone would write one and add it to community sources I would love to use it. thanks in advance!

Jailbroke my phone last night and it works GREAT! Thanks to the team. This is the first time I've done this and don't know what apps I need (or how to find them) to make this worthwhile. I got Navizon, but it's been off anywhere from 1 mile to 7 miles. Anyone care to point me in the right direction for apps?

Not working for me. I click on the install link, on a freshly restored 1.1.1 iphone, and it just quits safari without installing anything.

I'll bet the phones at Apple and AT&T are burning right now. Or then again maybe not. Any bets on how fast Apple responds with a patch, fix.?
Wasn't apple suppose to fix the TIFF situation before?
This iphone is HOT, and people want it hacked/cracked or what ever you want to label it as. If its fixed this week you can bet that immediately it will be worked on again. And broken into again, and again.
AT&T & Apple should take a lesson, seems t-mobile people want the iPhone also. Why do you think people unlock there BB's and jump from one to another? DUH cost, and CS.

Could Erica, or someone at TUAW confirm what was said earlier in the comments (#49) about the same website actually patching the Safari to disable further exploits (after the jailbreak process)? Apple ought to correct this rather critical error ASAP - this is one experiment gone astray... This is a sad consequence of naive engineers not having considered how their work could serve in the hands of those that have malign intentions.
