Instant Jailbreak for iPhone and iPod touch
A crew of hackers (including hdm/metasploit, rezn, dinopio, drudge, kroo, pumpkin, davidc, dunham, and NerveGas) have introduced a one-touch instant jailbreak for both iPhone and iPod touch. The jailbreak opens your iPhone for full disk access and installs Installer.app so you can add pretty much any third party application you like.
To use it, open Safari and point your browser to jailbreakme.com (which we aren't linking to so folks won't install this by accident, but you are prompted to confirm). Once there, read the directions, scroll to the bottom, and tap Install AppSnapp. If Safari disappears and you return to the main Home screen, you're good. Just wait a minute more for your unit to restart--don't touch anything until you see the slide to unlock screen. If Safari hangs, just quit out (press and hold Home for 4-8 seconds) and try again.
Once you get to slide-to-unlock, go ahead and unlock your iPhone or iPod touch. You'll return to your home screen which will contain a new Installer.app icon. If you'll want to ssh into your unit, install the BSD subsystem, Community Sources, and then install Open SSH--you may need to upgrade Installer.app (thanks Ste). With Open SSH and sshfs (part of Mac Fuse), you can open Finder windows that offer direct drag and drop access to your phone or touch.
The jailbreak really is as easy as it sounds. I restored my iPod touch and jailbroke it just a few minutes ago and it worked great.
UPDATE: Please try to do this using WiFi rather than EDGE. Success rates are much higher!

btw...why hasn't anyone written a third party app to enable calendar editing? seems like this still requires entering code to get it to work...which I won't do at this point. anyway if someone would write one and add it to community sources I would love to use it. thanks in advance!

Jailbroke my phone last night and it works GREAT! Thanks to the team. This is the first time I've done this and don't know what apps I need (or how to find them) to make this worthwhile. I got Navizon, but it's been off anywhere from 1 mile to 7 miles. Anyone care to point me in the right direction for apps?

Not working for me. I click on the install link, on a freshly restored 1.1.1 iphone, and it just quits safari without installing anything.

I'll bet the phones at Apple and AT&T are burning right now. Or then again maybe not. Any bets on how fast Apple responds with a patch, fix.?
Wasn't apple suppose to fix the TIFF situation before?
This iphone is HOT, and people want it hacked/cracked or what ever you want to label it as. If its fixed this week you can bet that immediately it will be worked on again. And broken into again, and again.
AT&T & Apple should take a lesson, seems t-mobile people want the iPhone also. Why do you think people unlock there BB's and jump from one to another? DUH cost, and CS.

Do you have to be connected to wifi for this to work?

Could Erica, or someone at TUAW confirm what was said earlier in the comments (#49) about the same website actually patching the Safari to disable further exploits (after the jailbreak process)? Apple ought to correct this rather critical error ASAP - this is one experiment gone astray... This is a sad consequence of naive engineers not having considered how their work could serve in the hands of those that have malign intentions.

Can someone confirm or unconfirm that this works with non-AT&T iPhones? Reading all 80+ comments shows only one comment on this, I'd like too hear if anyone else has managed.
Question 2: Can I use this to only install AppSnap on a allready jailbroken, unlocked 1.1.1 iPhone?

I'm stuned.
How can TUAW recommend doing this, basically handing over one's iPhone or iPod touch to some unknown, untrusted third party over the Internet?!?

Yea, it didn't work for me. Sad little iPhone :(

@90
Obviously you are not used to an open source community?
If there were any malicious intentions I am sure this would not be posted, but this situation is different. This is about freedom and the right to do what you want with your personal property. +1 to TUAW for the link.

I have a 1.1.1 iPhone, AT&T.
It worked for me :)
Only problem I thought I had was that I did not see the Installer App icon on the home screen, so I kept going back to the web site to re-install and it kept closing out of my Safari.
I restarted several times, and then it worked perfectly. All the applications work nicely.
This really rocks!

Comment #6 is an important question. If you already have applications installed on 1.02 do you need to restore before applying this version of jailbreak or can you apply it on top of the one you already have implemented? Do your currently installed applications disappear and need to be re-installed? After reviewing the answer to this question I am sure many will be more secure in how to proceed. Thanks.
