LogMeIn for Mac reaches 1.0
With Back to My Mac and iChat screen sharing, remote control options feature heavily on the Sparta List of Leopard features. Now, the remote control tool LogMeIn Free, in beta for the Mac since June, has reached release status. With the free client you can initiate or accept remote control sessions, cross-platform and through most firewalls. It's great for family support or switcher hand-holding. The 5.5 MB client can be downloaded now, and you can use it once you register with LogMeIn.LogMeIn has a heavy following among IT pros, who may subscribe to the industrial-strength IT Reach version of the product for additional features. Having a Mac client as a full peer helps remind those systems managers that there's a different-thinkin' crowd out there in the market.

I am surprised it took Logmein so long to begin supporting MAC's. I have used NTRconnect (free) for over a year and they supported both Windows & MACs from the get go. They also have another product focused at techsupport and helpdesk groups called NTRsupport which supports all platforms from Windows, MAC, to Linux. They are really commited to MAC. I tried Logmein free, but feature for feature NTRglobal's products far exceed logmein's.

There is a bunch of people with this issue which has been posted within the Apple support forums. I have never used logmein until I tried the other day. My iMac (running Leopard) cannot even open the site. When I type in the URL it just sits there and eventually times out, regardless of using Safari or FireFox. Yet, my Windows Vista machine, on the same LAN, can access the site with no issues. I then tried using the IP address of the website instead and was able to connect. However, once the plug-in was installed and I took over control of my Windows machine, I was not able to Disconnect the session. Although I selected the Disconnect option, the app became unresponsive on my Mac. It took approx 2 minutes for the control on the Vista machine to release, but the only way to stop it on the mac was to shutdown the browser. I haven't even tried to take control of the iMac because it specifically states on logmein's website that it will not work for Leopard at this time.
December 07 2007 at 8:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI did some more research, and found out that the problem was with my Verizon FIOS router. I had to change the MTU settings from 1500 to 1492. I was able to get to the web site, down load LOGMEIN and it works perfectly.
There's alot of information regarding this issue and solutions at the LOGMEIN forums, so I'd search there before giving up.
I am running Leopard on a new MacPro.
I love the PC product, but I'm new to the Mac. This is probably a stupid question, but I cannot access the Logmein web site via my Mac. I can browse the Internet without problems, but the logmein pages never appear. I've even download Firefox and get the same results.
Is there a Safari security setting that I need to set?
Thanks for all the positive comments, guys. Means a lot to a lowly support rep to see so much praise for their product.
@ortho, iGO, and SA:
The "1.0" release for the Mac version is in name-only. The current version number of the software is 4.0.684. If you need it, you should be able to pull down the latest version by clicking the toolbar icon and checking for updates under Tools.
@Mike O:
If you do believe these issues are LogMeIn-related, you can always submit a support ticket through our website, or give our support line a call. If it is indeed a problem with our software, we'll do what we can to get it running properly.
@erwin:
Not sure where you're getting your info, but it just isn't correct. All remote connections through LogMeIn are negotiated by our gateway server with 256-bit SSL encryption. Once the connection to your computer is established, our gateway server drops out of the picture entirely, leaving you with a direct, fully-encrypted peer-to-peer tunnel. Have a look here for more info regarding our security measures:

Hey LMI-Jeremy; great job you do, as I recognize you from the LMI support forums. I can't stop giving praise to the Mac client, and has saved me many hours in getting family up and running on their Macs when they encounter minor problems or questions. Keep up the great work!
December 07 2007 at 12:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow are you all getting to this app? I have been trying for days to get logmein.com to respond and it simply will not. Is this vaporware?
December 06 2007 at 6:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI used LogMeIn Free for my PC for about two years without any problems, and now that I've upgraded to a Mac, I've found the Mac version to be very stable on Leopard. I easily access my office iMac from my wife's home PC nearly every day. Combined with Leopard's automatic on and off options, it's a perfect, free solution.
My understanding was that remote control traffic was encrypted- can someone verify that?
Even if it is, though, it's generally wise practice to avoid doing sensitive tasks (banking, for instance) while using remote control or a wireless connection, no matter how many precautions you've taken.
FYI, In the about page it lists the version as: 4.0.684 ... unless my install is screwed.
December 05 2007 at 2:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNo, the installed is not screwy; there's been a few auto-updates lately, and 4.0.684 with a build date of Nov 29 is the most current.
have been a beta user since they posted it up in their labs section, and love love love it.
Anyone had any luck with Hamachi in Leopard? Mine always seems to crash or go offline.
December 05 2007 at 1:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMy greatest concern is that all traffic is routed unencrypted through their gateway. That means they (who are they anyway?) can see and access your computer too.
Make your own judgement if you find this acceptable or not...
I am sticking with a direct ssh tunnel to my clients.
I've been singing the praises of logmein for quite a while. congrats to them for going to release status with Mac systems.
