Last year they upgraded the Mac Pros before Macworld (or it might have been NAB) because it was only a minor upgrade and presumably they didn't think it was worth mentioning at the show.

On the flip side of that, something like the iTunes rental agreements could have been finalized yesterday, and now Steve has enough material to fill two hours on the 15th. So the lowest priority announcements get bumped. I'm waiting for a new Mac Pro, so I'll gladly welcome some "minor" news this morning.
Let the page reloads begin...

Maybe it's new Nanos (higher capacity, more/different colors. The reason I think of that is because on Amazon they have a promotion for buying the Nano and you get 15 free songs until January 15th.

I'm betting on a plague of locusts in the server room, conjured by the Sony booth at CES

Perhaps they are removing all of the Holidays stuff from the store?

So why do they have to take the store down when updating products? When was the last time you saw Amazon.com display a "We'll be back soon" message while updating products? Seems Apple store's technology isn't that good.

As for the reason "why," look what we're all doing right now.

Was it you who gave the same comment last time AppleStore was down, or are you citing him/her? ;)

Apple today revised the Mac Pro and Xserves with a new architecture and the recently released Penryn Processors. The Mac Pro combines two 45-nm Quad-Core Xeon processors running up to 3.2GHz and up to 4TB of internal storage. The standard 8-core configuration starts at $2799.
So, enjoy yourselves Mac Pro users
