Front Row update
Looks like today was the ultimate Apple software update day in addition to that other thing that also happened! In their last batch of updates, Apple updated Front Row for Leopard. Here's what Apple says about the update:This Front Row update provides for bug fixes and improved iTunes compatibility.
Please note, this update for Front Row requires iTunes 6.0.4 or later, and iPhoto 6.0.2. You can download this update by using Software Update, or by visiting the Apple downloads website.

i just got an iMac and i imported everything off my old G4 MacBook, and then when i had to update my iTunes version, Front Row only reads my old import off my G4, which, obviously, i'm not using. could someone please tell me how to change the settings on Front Row to pick up my newer iTunes? i can't find any kind of preferences or anything to change it - i'm usually very computer literate, but i'm having SERIOUS issues with this one!

It's Apple's genius of making dangling things in front of you. Sometimes I believe Fake Steve Jobs stories when I see things like this happen...
Apple wants to sell aTV's for that purpose, not Mac Minis. I am dying to get a Mac Mini for my 46" for 2 purposes. 1 - have a big ass monitor. 2 - watch movies. Now I'm in limbo because, what do I want more? The Mac Mini will allow me to rent movies...but I'm lazy and want to be able to do all that without picking up a keyboard. This is the genius that is Apple. Luckily, the rentals haven't been announced for Canada, so I get to sit on my cash and wait for them...and hopefully, maybe enough of an uproar will happen and Apple will give in to adding it to Front Row.
Be great if they could use the remote disc technology to share a DVD over the network. Stick a movie in my G5's optical drive, and play it on my plasma via Apple TV!
Take 2.5 perhaps?
What I don't get is they've upgraded AppleTV's interface and have added new features like Flickr/.Mac and rentals. Why can't they add that to the other Front Row UI?
I use my MBP to watch videos and DVDs all the time on the TV, especially when I travel and can plug it into the rooms TV. It would make so much more sense.
We spend so much money on the MBP, and they still want us to buy an AppleTV to boot. Ridiculous.
It fixes the subtitle bug with Perian. Well not exactly. Before, when you played a movie in Front Row and you have an external SRT with subtitles, the screen would go black as soon as a subtitle is shown (the sound continues).
Now, with the update, the movie shows correctly, but still no subtitles. In Tiger this works fine.
It still shows in German for me.

January 16 2008 at 1:04 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI called Apple two weeks ago to report the problem that Front Row did not work with Aperture. Surprisingly, they had no idea that it was a problem. I received a phone call a week ago telling me that the engineers were working on fixing it, and to look for an update within the next few weeks.
January 29 2008 at 2:37 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne of the main fixes I was interested in was restoring the ability to play air tunes via Front Row (Leopard killed it). Anyone tried it yet?
January 16 2008 at 12:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is also the main thing I was hoping for. I just tried and it does not appear to have been fixed yet.
January 16 2008 at 6:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnd I still get that aggravating "Your computer is not connected to the Internet" error message when trying to view movie trailers on my Mac Pro. Apple is kind of batting zero with me today, after that iPod Touch BS.
January 16 2008 at 12:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think we should boycott the stupid surcharge. Although I doubt it will work. It sucks knowing that when you decide to do things the legit way (actually buying maps and these programs instead of hacking the firmware) that you get pummeled with cost fees. I mean come on...
January 16 2008 at 11:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYea... seasons are skrewy, but at least the odd connection errors I was having with it when hooked up to my HDTV are gone. That's handy.
When I saw the update though, i thought the no brainer situation. Rentals in Front Row (just like the AppleTV interface)... there's really no reason this isn't included.
Duuuuuumbfounding.
Isn't this going to be built in? I thought the movie bit doesnt kick in till february. Watched the keynote, and thats what he said. There would be no reason to have the content on the Mac otherwise, and as he said, we can transfer from the mac to an iPod, which means it is on the mac....
I think it is just not out yet...
Maybe. I didn't watch the keynote itself admittedly. I'll go ahead and do that.
In the meantime, it IS a bit odd. People with AppleTV are reporting rentals are available, but anyone anywhere who wants a rental via iTunes itself (and thus Front Row) seem to only be able to find the Aristocats. Meanwhile, I've honestly been a little bewhildered by a complete lack of confusion over it all within the Apple blogosphere...
Stevekins saying something in the keynote itself would answer these questions, but not clear up all the confusion for those relying on blogs.
Or maybe I'm just wrong about everything... which is possible. :)
