Happy 1.1.3 firmware ending for TUAW reader
TUAW Reader Randal S. writes in with a happy unbricking story. After running AnySIM on his 1.0.2 iPhone, he ignored the warnings and upgraded his phone to a 1.1.1 brick. "Even taking it back to 1.0.2, I couldn't get past the bad IMEI and SIM messages. I tried many things to get it fixed. Hopeless."
Now, after the release of 1.1.3, he tried putting his now-1.0.2 phone into recovery mode and updated it to 1.1.3. "It rewrote the firmware, and I now have a fully functional 1.1.3 phone! Yeay! So 1.1.3 firmware must be a complete rewrite. Just FYI, but you probably already knew."
See, TUAW readers? Happy endings do come true! His 1.1.3 phone is back to being locked but it's working again and can be used on the AT&T network.

i have a HUGE problem... ok... SO, i am with T-Mobile... I unlocked my phone with 1.0.2 and i have been having that for forvever... when 1.1.3 came out, i didn't know that it would screw my phone up, but it did... ummm... the upgrade worked perfectly, BUT i'm stuck at the activation screen... i'm willing to wait for the jailbreak and all, BUT i just want to know if there is a shortcut to get to the main screen at least... i have tried the one where you use *#301# and the the 0 and hold and decline... whenever i press decline it just goes back to the screen that has a picture of the itunes logo and the end of the charger that says to slide for emergency calls... so... i'm lost... if i could just get to the main screen i would be fine until the jailbreak is realeased... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... somebody help me... just to the main screen...

I live and work in Afghanistan and don't want to pay roaming charges every time I turn on the phone. I also don't want people to have to call the US to get me... ! I'll keep paying my monthly AT&T fees because I'll use their SIM when I'm in the US. But in the meantime I really want to put in a local SIM and use the phone!

Unlocking for using other SIM cards is a different issue and I hope that people continue to work on hacking 1.1.3 and whatever comes next. I have no problem paying AT&T for a plan but I balk at $3.00/min roaming charges from Iraq (or Jordan or anywhere in the Middle East and Asia), where I work and live most of the time. I use my AT&T SIM in the States and in Europe but it just doesn't make sense out here. Yes, I know, it is Apple's business plan and I agreed to the contract. I'm not convinced though that if my current iphone died I would buy another one as it isn't an appropriate "world" phone if it can't be unlocked for a reasonable fee. I represent a minority of users in Apple's business model so I don't expect them to care. In any event, it's been a great device so far and I am envious of the new features in 1.1.3.
January 18 2008 at 4:26 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyso if a iphone is "bricked", is there a way to fix that? i have a 1.1.1 hacked iphone and am thinking of upgrading to a 1.1.3.
January 17 2008 at 6:35 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyfirst download a copy of the 1.1.1 firmware and restore your iPhone o 1.1.1 so that it is not jailbroken anymore. then upgrade to 1.1.3.
January 18 2008 at 3:37 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo how about an unlocked and jailbreak phone with independence (T-Mobile Sim) firmware 1.0.2, can it be upgraded to 1.1.3 and be somehow unlock the official way signing up with ATT? or will it brick my phone?

January 17 2008 at 5:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCan Randall please e-mail me, as I have some questions about this process? (mweintr@gmail.com)
I have a 1.0.2 with AnySIM, and I'm curious about upgrading to 1.1.3.
Thanks!
Another great thing about this 1.1.3 update is that the little convert-to-AAC-rename-to-.m4r method for custom ringtones still works.
January 17 2008 at 4:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyi think what's more important i the ability to unlock. sure the SDK will solve the problem of putting extra apps on the iphone sans any jailbreaking...but i want to be able to use my t-mobile service without having to surrender my soul to AT&T
