Seeing iPhone in non-carrier countries? We want photos!
Some critics scoff at the notion that as many as 30% of all iPhones are being used in countries without an official carrier agreement. Just from our own reader comments/reports (and dim-witted criminals) we have no problem with the plausibility of those figures. One thing is for certain, plenty of people outside the officially contracted countries have and are using iPhones. And we want pictures!Reader Jim wrote to us with this suggestion, and we think it's just great. So, here's the deal - if you live in a country where the iPhone is not officially available (or you are visiting one of those countries) and you spot someone using an iPhone, take a picture. If you are a non-carrier iPhone owner yourself, we want your pictures too! We would like to see shots that at least somewhat indicative of their geographical location -- just so we can answer any of the nay-sayers who try to claim the photos are fake.
Send your pictures to photos AT tuaw.com and we'll post up a gallery of the submissions. I think it will be interesting to see how many places the iPhone has traveled, even without an official contract.
Thanks Jim!

I work in UAE and there're a lot of unlocked iPhones. Big departmental store sell it for $800 ( ouch! ) and small mobile shop sell for $700. There are some 10 people in my office now using the iPhone, thanks to a colleague who just came back from US. We got it for $399 and unlocked it ourselves and use it on both Etisalat and Du networks. It's great!!!

Hi there! I use to travel a lot throughout Russia - Moscow, Perm, Ufa, Kazan, Tyumen etc. and I assure you, I've seen hundreds of jailbroken iPhones out here! Me and my wife own 4 of them, despite the fact that I'm using one of my 2 iPhones with a multi-SIM with 6 different phone numbers. Furthermore we use another 4 iPhones at our TONI&GUY hair shop in Perm for our visitors' WiFi Internet browsing and video entertainment. ;D

Check out ripdev.com for the Russian, Bulgarian and Greek iPhone localization projects and Caterpillar, a usefull iPhone add-on.
Thinking in Demand-and-Offer terms, I presume there are lots of iPhones in Greece, Bulgaria and, of course, Russia.
I wish Steve Jobbs would spend more time and effort on creating benefits for consumers (like new apps for iPhone or letting third parties create those apps for iPhone) than making profits on us, consumers. Good luck, Stevie, and thanks for the challenge! :D

My cousin who is on vacation in Vietnam is actually using his Iphone there, also there are relatives there who are also using the Iphone in Vietnam as well. I think the Iphone is one damn popular mobile device, it is pretty expensive in Vietnam though.

I live in Mozambique and I have a 16gig Iphone that I brought back from the USA. In Mozambique they sell them at over $800.00 USD, and thats for a 8gig. Its sad that Apple has restricted their market to a few countries.
