iPod 5G gets an update to 1.3

If there's one thing you can be sure of in the software update department, it's that an otherwise nondescript iPod software update will include "bug fixes." In the case of the new 1.3 update for 5G and 5.5G iPods, that's about all we know so far. The update is available via iTunes but has not shown up yet on Apple's download pages.
I've just installed the update on my iPod and there aren't any visible changes to speak of. If you've got the update and you notice anything odd, please do speak up.
Thanks Oli!

Hey I noticed that sort albums work well on the update... till now the sorting was happening only for artists, not for albums... its now happening for albums as well....

Ah, you're hella right! I'm so happy! I've been waiting for this to be addressed since the pre-click wheel ages! I won't be surprised if most people never noticed, though... and that makes me sad...

I hope this update, As I hope with every Update, that it takes care of the Phantom that takes over my Ipod if I leave it unattended for more than 4 hours and than go to use it and nothing happens causing me to reboot it. Sometimes the Apple splash will show up for 30 secs or so and than go back to the last song I was playing, sometimes it restarts which if I am on the Motorcycle makes the reason for null as I have to start it over.

I like that they're still issuing updates for my ipod. I'm a big proponent of using/updating tech (MP3 players, computers, etc) until they fall apart, rather than buying something new at the drop of a hat.
That said, I really want an ipod touch or iphone. :-)

One of the bugs that was supposed to be fixed in this release is the audiobook bug. You know, buy and audiobook from iTunes and it shows in the proper playlist everywhere but on the iPod. This was a bug i submitted and it is supposedly fixed in this release (got a reply on my bug today). Too bad I can't check anymore...no more 5G iPod

I noticed after the update that a 2.5mm strand of 24K gold approximately the length of a swizzle stick extrudes from the headphone jack when removing the connector, but only after listening to a TUAW podcast. Go figure.

I'm downloading mine, and it seems to be going at a slug's pace installing onto my iPod.
One thing that fixed for me seems to be the Album art. On 1.2.3, it would show black boxes instead of the album art on some songs (iTunes store purchases actually).

The opposite has happened for me. Never had any trouble with my album art but now some have completely disappeared and others are showing as the dreaded black boxes. Is there anyway I can revert to version 1.2.3?

All you have to do is use the Menu+Center restart on your iPod to get rid of the black boxes. It happened to me a while back, and it must be a random glitch of some type.

"This ipod looks so 1990's when comparing it to the ipod touch and the iphone."
Yeah, but I'll keep my 5.5 iPod. I can use it in the dark, I can use it in pocket, etc. The scroll wheel is so much more convenient that having to use touch controls. With the touch, you have to physically pull it, put it to your face and use the controls while looking at it. With earlier ipods, or the classic, you can control it without having to look at the screen (once you're in a playlist).
My iPod is still at FW 1.2.1 - Everything works perfect and it will stay like that until some real compelling feature is introduced. I use to jump on every FW update, until I got tired of new bugs being introduced with each one. 1.2.1 has been very stable and bug-free.

I noticed two changes
1. In the sorting of the songs, symbols like () are automatically ignored.
2. In the settings menu, in the time zone, there were some time zones that were absent there although there were present in the clock. Now these missing time zones are present (Like Chennai).

Didn't leave out podcasts from the artists list like someone mentioned :-(
My podcast menu was fast up until I upgraded to 1.2.3 and it is not fixed in 1.3. Now all it does is lag when im browsing through the podcast menu.

I found a link to a brief summary of the fixes and the location for the software w/o iTunes.
