Adobe releases 64-bit Lightroom 2 beta with Retouch tool

Over at the Adobe Labs Lightroom site, the beta for Lightroom 2 is now available. John Nack revealed that among other things (release notes PDF) version 2 will feature 64-bit support as well as a new Retouch tool. This marks a shift toward selective editing similar to the new editing plugin architecture that made its appearance with Aperture 2.1.

The Lightroom 2b1 is available for download to "all current Lightroom customers." New customers "can download the beta and try it for thirty days" or hit up a friend who already owns it. It's worth noting that the beta "does not read, upgrade or import catalogs from previous versions of Lightroom" and you should keep using 1.3.1 "for your primary workflow needs."

with all the chatter about photoshop cs4 not being 64-bit on the mac, it surprises me that so little has been said about their intel-only 64-bit stance on lightroom v2.

i was looking forward to a little performance boost in my powermac g5 when software eventually transitioned to 64-bit, but this seems to be setting a troubling precedent.

A big difference compared with Aperture is that while LR doesn't have a plug-in architecture except for export modules, its retouch tool is non-destructive. This means it's applied "on the fly" to the raw data in realtime without the need to create a TIF, correct the TIF and then work with this TIF from that point onward (making it hard to go back and adjust earlier edits).

They also announced that CS4 will only be 64-bit on Windows, due to Apple canceling Carbon 64. They are going to rewrite it as Cocoa for CS5.
