German iPhone buyers get discounted 8GB handsets

Was is los in Deutschland heute? First the iTunes video store finally makes a German-language debut this week, and today we receive word via a T-Mobile press release that the first tiered-discount plan for iPhone purchases is now in effect. German buyers can take advantage of a limited-time offer (April 7 to June 30) to purchase an 8GB iPhone for as little as 99 euros, if they sign up for the top 2-year contract on a service plan (the Complete XL, 1000 minutes and 300 SMS for 89 euro a month) at buy time. Translated offer pages here and here. Lower-priced plans offer a comparatively lower discount, with the top price for an 8GB iPhone at 249 euros. Note that the 16 GB iPhone remains full freight at 499 euro.

Is this another example of the iPhone shortage phenomenon, or just some clever promotion by T-Mobile to enhance sales of the lower-end handset? Ach du meine Gute, ich bin völlig verwirrt.

Thanks Thorsten & c0caine

LOL, that's funny - normally I don't like U.S. people speaking other languages just to make fun of these languages because many of these U.S. people don't care for other countries than the U.S.A., but _THIS_ time it was really, really funny!

Good article, funny, etc. - keep on!

So, I live in the Netherlands. Let's say I went into Germany, purchased the iPhone, but don't activate it at home, I just have gotten myself an iPhone for a ridiculously cheap price? Anyone care to explain this for me?

Im afraid it won´t work like that. Unlike AT&T in the US, T-Mobile will only sell you an iPhone if you sign up for the contract at the shop...

Don´t want to be the know-it-all-guy, but since other guys already startet it...
It is the german flag even though it´s rotated. If you watch closely you´ll see that on the flag of belgium the colors are in a different order (Germany -> black, red, "gold"; Belgium -> Red, Yellow, Black)

And: The new rates allow me to buy a legal iPhone finally. Great news! :)

OH BTW:

"limited-time offer (April 7 to June 30)" - Does this mean that the new iPhone will be out by 1 July???... and that the 16GB EDGE iPhone will still be available?

yeah, this google translate. they did a couple of other languages with French (I think) a while ago. Sounded funny (I speak FR+DE).

Let me *just* say this because I lol-ed when I saw the second word: "Was is..." O__O

anyway... DAMN!!! I bloody paid $432 (in Cupertino) for mine... (BTW I don't live in the US, AKA it's unlocked). unlockers are gonna snatch them quickly. But... who wants a 2.5G iPhone? I think you'll make a few hundred bucks if you sell them online. and ah... I'm not going to germany anytime soon. so you guys don't worry I won't buy out a whole crate of iPhones.

This is not the german flag since it is rotated. Sorry for nit-picking but the orientation is quite important when flags are involved.

The German flag CAN be rotated vertically i.e. hung sideways.

OK, so then I guess it's July 1 for new iPhones! Seriously, I just bought a crappy phone to tide me over until the iPhone is updated. I hope I don't have to wait that long.
