10.5.3 and Beta 6 SDK, Oh my!
Something interesting is hiding in 10.5.3. I don't know what it is. I don't know what it does. But if it's necessary to upgrade if you want to use the new SDK release, that means that there's a something that ties 10.5.3 to new iPhone features. So intrepid TUAW readers-slash-detectives, what can you find lurking in that new 10.5.3 firmware release that provides new and exciting iPhone functionality? Let us know in the comments.
My completely wild pulling-it-from-the-posterior guess is something to do with AppStore support -- or maybe the iNewton -- or maybe "back to my iPhone" support -- or... No really, I have no clue. Hopefully Uncle Steve will give us something nice for Keynotemas. Until then, see if you can figure it out.

Well, a rather obscure little tidbit is that in 10.5.3 you can now specify an alternate e-mail address for a .Mac account in Mail.app.
Previous versions of Mail would let you type something else into the "E-Mail Address" field for a .mac account, but would always revert back to your default "@mac.com" e-mail address when you left the dialog box.
As of 10.5.3, any e-mail address you put in there can now be used with an account that is otherwise created specifically as a .Mac account. This address also syncs into the iPhone's "Accounts.plist" file via iTunes' Mail Accounts sync, although at this time the iPhone itself doesn't seem to use this address in any way.
Of course, the .Mac webmail and the smtp.mac.com server still refuse to send or accept mail from anything other than an @mac.com address at this point
This is a small thing, I realize, since you could always just configure standard IMAP against your .Mac account and then use any FROM address you liked, but doing so limited some of the .Mac integration, particularly on the iPhone itself (ie, Web Galleries come to mind).
With rumours of tighter dot Mac integration with iPhone 2.0, perhaps an update is coming that will finally allow us to use alternate e-mail addresses with .Mac
Wish I could be excited with you, Erica.
But 10.5.3 did nothing but screw up my entire 4 months of Time Machine backups. I hate this thing.

Jeff --
I backup wirelessly from my Macbook Air to a Western Digial Mybook and I received the same error the first time it tried. But I also received the same error from my iMac (Intel 24") initially. Since then both have backed up normally and I am typing this note from my MB Air and it is in the process of backing up "467 MB of 1.5 GB" -- I think it was just a hiccup a reboot or disconnect/reconnect to my home network fixed. Good luck.
Eric,
thanks for the hope... but I don't how to fix this? I've tried everything I can think of. I, too, have a WD Book... why would this upgrade just stop it from working?
Wish I could be excited with you, Erica.

I would offer my yet-to-be first-born for Note and Todo synching. I mean, it screams out as such an obvious must-have feature. Please, Mr Stevie, please.

"Keynotemas"
I love this word! It describes exactly what I feel when Keynotes (espescially Stevenotes) are getting closer! I never know what I will get, but I am totally excited!
Thanks Erica for this (again) wonderful post.

Or could it be some evil trick to force iphone-buyers over on Leopard, like the poor ipod-buyers who are forced to upgrade to Leopard when they realize their new ipod is incompatible with Jaguar (but still works with very old Windows versions)?
May 29 2008 at 3:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's what I was wondering.
I'm planning on getting the new iPhone in November when my current contract runs out. But I'm still running Tiger and don't plan on upgrading my computer any time soon.
If I have to upgrade my computer to use the new iPhone I'll be a little more then unhappy.
They still haven't added native WWAN support for the AT&T GT Ultra Express card yet (as was expected in 10.5.3). Kind of a bummer since you can't get the GT 3.6 card anymore. Makes Verizon the only integrated option for ExpressCard on OS X atm.
