10.5.3: Sync your iPhone contacts with Google
If you have an iPhone synced with Address Book.app, then you've been able to sync your contacts with Yahoo for a while now, but something that has been missing is Google sync. Sure, you can always use Spanning Sync, but we all want something free and built-into the OS. Well, those dreams are now true according to a new Google blog post and the introduction of Mac OS X 10.5.3. On the Mac you normally sync your iPhone with, you will see a new option when you open the "General" tab in Address Book preferences. When you check "Synchronize with Google" you can enter your Google credentials and syncing will proceed. Apple and Google did leave some people out, however, as this new feature works only on Macs that have an iPhone synced with iTunes.
Thanks, Nathan and Ryan!

Can I sync the contacts I already have on my Gmail account with my new iphone?
July 20 2008 at 7:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow does this work exactly? I see the checkbox in Address Book's preferences, but nothing happens when I check it and enter my gmail credentials...
May 28 2008 at 11:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWould all of the iPhone haters explain why I see this in the Address Book prefs, and why iSync seems to be working just fine without an iPhone?
Come on, people. Stop assuming and do a little legwork. Someone try this and report back, please.
an iphone for gmail adress book syncing? Apple should get some priorities straight pratically nothing except afp works on osx server 10.5... apple is only interested in iphones and ipods...
May 28 2008 at 6:45 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyhmm.. the Help file is not updated to show the Google addition. Just mentions the Yahoo version...
so when/how does it sync? When I sync my iphone?
Isn't the Exchange contact syncing option new as well?
May 28 2008 at 6:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNope. Exchange sync has been there at least since Tiger...possibly Panther. Either way, I've been using it for years.
May 28 2008 at 11:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is pretty useless. It doesn't actually "sync" anything, because Google doesn't have any way to sync. It appears to just be a glorified one-way copy. Also, it doesn't appear to work with the Google Apps version of Gmail, which is really lame.
May 28 2008 at 5:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYes, it does work with Google Apps
May 28 2008 at 10:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAny ideas of how to enable Address Book / google syncing without an iPhone / iPod????
May 28 2008 at 5:39 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyTry this:

Does it sync everything in my address book or can I select specific groups? I've 815 address book cards, and most of those are work related; so I'd only want friends and family uploaded to google and leave the bulk of them alone.

Yep, this Dutch OS X user is real satisfied with the way he's being treated with regards to contact syncing.
