An ode to my iPod video

How do I love my iPod video? Let me count the ways. Seriously, I adore this small piece of technology. It's nearly 3 years old now -- I ordered it the first day it was available -- and this 5th generation 30GB iPod video unit is still chugging along and making our lives better.

First and foremost, it is an absolutely fab music player. Apple did it right. My iPod offers all the audio control I could ask for including my much-beloved parental controls that keep my kids from blasting out their ear drums. On behalf of parents everywhere, thank you Apple for giving my kids' ears a chance to grow up.

I'm not a serious audiophile, fussing about detailed audio reproduction. I have listened to music of every genre, podcasts, audio books and so forth on this thing and it still sounds great.

The iPod video is the perfect size. It fits in my hand and my pocket, my purse and my backpack. It's quite a bit smaller and lighter than my iPhone despite its onboard hard drive.

More of my overflowing praise for the iPod video below...

The click wheel on the iPod lets me control playback from my pocket. I can change the volume and click back and forth between tracks without ever looking. And it does this without ever making me wear earbuds, a headset style that I loathe.

I love my iPod's video out features. I have a rigged-up hacked-together video system in my car, all based on the fact that my 5G iPod can output video through the ear jack using a standard cable. Hundreds of hours of kids video have passed through my iPod. My son thinks of it as a SpongeBob dispensing device.

My iPod can play games. Sure, most of the games are pretty limited but we're fond of the quizzes and miniature golf and mahjongg. And my daughter plays Phase to a Hannah Montana soundtrack.

My iPod is a portable hard drive too. I've used it to ferry around work folders and medical records over the years. And it's been modded at one time to provide guided tours for a school project -- because it could.

My iPod can record audio. I bought one of those memo microphones for a TUAW story about the iPod touch a while back. But because the touch requires pre-amplification, that mic found a home on my iPod video instead. Without installing any special software, I can record memos on my iPod and they sync right into iTunes. Is that handy or what?

My iPod is a whiz at slide shows. I can hook up the same (free) cable to the iPod that I use in my car and project our latest iPhotos on our TV. I checked a box in iTunes a few years ago and now I don't even think about it. The photos are there.

And have I gone on enough about the 30GB of hard drive storage? That's umpteen hours of podcasts, photos, Top Chef episodes, music, audio books and so forth. We will not run low on Avatar and Hannah Montana any time soon.

My iPod is insanely durable. This baby has been dropped, kicked, chewed, undercharged, overcharged, punted, and worse. My then-two-year-old put it through the paces and it's still producing high-quality SpongeBob three years later as he gets ready to head off to Kindergarten.

Before the iPod video, I didn't have much use for iPods. They were sweet, they did music but they just didn't fit my lifestyle. The second I saw the video model though, it clicked. This was the one. The promised iPod. The right fit.

And it was.

(Yay Apple.)

Feel free to join in the gushing iPod love in the comments.

Reading this, I realize the same affection for my 5G 30GB black iPod video. I got my as a refurbed unit in Aug. '06 and it has never given me any trouble. I think the battery on it might be slipping, but it still keeps rolling. I'm finding that I use it more for video than for audio; it's perfect for taking in a TV episode in bed or while waiting in line at the DMV. I just love how I can have my choice of any kind of entertainment at my fingertips wherever I want it. Out of all the gadgets I own, it's my most favorite. If, and when, it does decide to die, I'm upgrading to the 160GB classic - I'll have two-thirds of my library in my pocket :)

I got my 30 GB 5G the summer they came out, and it has stuck by my hip ever since. From working in warehouses, to driving up and down the east coast to going on national tours for 3 years. I dropped it a few times, shoved it in a bag, put rockbox, linux, and various UI tweaks to it. Now it's back to stock firmware, and remains my number one music player. The battery life still rocks hardcore. I'll keep up with it until it dies before getting a new one.

Like many others here, I love my 5th Gen (5.5 actually) iPods (a white 60G and black 80G). I do have an iPhone, but I can't consider it a serious iPod, especially at only 8 Gigs.

I have everything loaded on my 5th iPods, plenty of cheap accessories, no limits on running video through a TV, able to navigate blindfolded, decent sound and battery life. With a SendStation adapter, I can jack it into my hybrid's line-in jack and enjoy great sound through the car's sound system.

If one them died tomorrow, I'd be looking to replace it with another used or refurbished 5th Gen.

I love my 5G iPod, but not with the original firmware. Rockbox FTW! I love that I can play any format of music (FLAC, OGG, whatever) and I don't have to use iTunes to put files on it. It works on any platform, which is important if you use Mac/Windows at work and Linux at home.

I dunno. The 5.5G will always have a special place in my heart (it was my first, too...you never love a gadget quite the same way again), but my 160GB Classic has battery life that slaughters what my old one could do...long enough that it's never died once in between the times I needed to plug it in to sync data anyways. But the new firmware sucks. Now I wish I'd not sold my old one...I bet you could hack the new screen and drive onto the 5.5G motherboard, and get the battery life/huge size and the better interface.

Well it's really a great iPod. For me, it's the best one made by Apple.

The actual iPod Classic doesn't have the feel of the 5G (mine is a 5.5G 30GB). It's slower, looks bigger and the audio is worse.

I will never change this iPod for another one. I use it almost every day and it's still as new. Went to the beach, worked above the altitude recommended my Apple and went to every place that a teenager like me goes, and he (yes, my iPod is a he) survived and keeps working as new.

He's going to make 2 years this christmas (self gift) and he still has the screen as new, the battery life is almost the same. Besides the typical scratches in the back, the front is just like what it was in his first working day.

He's really what I call a "war machine". A wonderful piece of technology that kept me entertained in long trips (except when i forgot to charge him, it happens), made me share my music, videos and photos with friends, without even needing a computer.

And who doesn't love is glossy black finish? Why black? The iPod is a very common device in my school and one thing I noticed is that the vast majority of the iPods were white. I like to be different and really liked the black, so went for a black iPod.

Apple needs to rethink their iPod strategy. It continues to sell well but I think that the actual iPod generations don't have the genes of the old ones. They are just one more player with the difference of the market share. Besides iPod Touch there is no difference between an iPod and another player these days. Apple needs to make them different to continue succeeding. And please, make glossy black and white black.

I loved my 5g 30 gig iPod until I hooked it up to the iPod adapter in my old car and it shorted out. It was probably the car that did it to the iPod (the car wasn't exactly in the best condition - it blew fuses all the time), but the dock connector began to smoke and the iPod died a slow, painful death. I guess its time for an iPod classic...

Yes, the iPod video was a great device. I fondly remember my 30GB one. It has now been passed on to another by the great passer-onner of various junk known as ebay. Now, I have my iPod touch to keep me entertained. It's not quite as roomy as my 5g was, but it has wifi!
