Rogers announces iPhone rates in Canada

We've known for awhile that Rogers would be bringing the iPhone 3G to Canada, but we didn't know what kind of plans would be offered. Well, the wondering can stop because Rogers has just posted a website detailing all the service plans and features you can get for your iPhone in Canda, and how much it'll cost you.

As you can see from the above chart service plans start at $60 (Canadian) and go to $115. Interestingly, there is no unlimited data option which might cause trouble down the road when you load up your iPhone with lots of heavy network using 3rd party apps.

Check out Rogers' page for all the details.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

If you are a current Rogers Wireless customer, you should participate in the following: On July 11th, at 6PM EST, turn off your Rogers phone for one hour. If their network goes quiet for an hour, they will notice this more than a petition. It will also hit them where it hurts. Spread the word.

I currently have a blackberry pearl with Telus, when I heard the Iphone was coming to canada, I was thinking of switching over, however now that I see the data plans, im definitely going to stick with my $30/month unlimited data plan with Telus, I normally use 100+ MB just on my blackberry per month, and thats mostly just plain text emails and surfing..

Stupid Rogers, will they ever learn?

Either one of you guys or I will create a website called fuckrogers.com
Other than that I will boycott iPhone from Rogers, and I encourage you guys doing the same. Lets teach Rogers a lesson. I was really looking looking forward to getting iPhone and was hoping for an unlimited plan at $45, and now this has really pissed me off.

In all he discussions about the Rogers plans, the focus seems to be the total dollar amount that a customer would have to pay. The other side of this coin and the more important one is that these plans cripple the iPhone and the User Experience

On the lowest plan, these users will be unable to use MobileMe or any apps that access the internet for updates. Why would someone want an iPhone if they can't use it for what its meant to do? Essentially it becomes a pretty phone with fast internet access which you can't use. Its like having a Ferrari but you are only allowed to use it 2 hours a month!

The other aspect is the metering imposed by limited bandwidth. Who wants to have a device which you are hesitant to use when you want to lest you go over a limit and incur enormous charges?

Rogers uses download stats from 10 years ago. Todays email and web pages as well as other apps that use the internet don't resemble that period at all.

If Rogers was smart they would offer the iphone with unlimited data to everyone for 90 days. Once these 90 days are past and people have had exposure to all that the iPhone can do, then they can make a decision which apps they would often use and which not and choose a plan accordingly. This would benefit Rogers as it increases the chances of many more customers choosing the higher value packages once they have seen what it can do for them. Many more people would be walking around with iPhones showing their friends who could then become customers as well.

Unfortunately, this requires breaking away from the mold used by Rogers till now, and they would rather play it safe.

I currently use an unlocked iPhone (EDGE model) and wasn't to concerned about not having unlimited data on the iPhone 3G Voice & Data plans until I just realized MobileMe will most likely eat up a lot of data when doing syncing for backups.

Someone link to the unlimited Bell data plan. Cuz it's nowhere on their website. Their prices are worse than Rogers! Telus OTOH still has unlimited data (EVDO) for $30...

If a telco over here (The Neths) would try to sell an network integrated service (i.e. Call Display) in a value pack, they'd be taken apart.

Canadians, you have my pity!

The reason this happened to us is our government's silly laws that telecom companies had to be home-brew, meaning no foreign-owned companies. So while Vodafone and T-Mobile were invading the world? Rogers, Bell and Telus got carte blanche from our own government to run foul, and all 3 companies have basically made an unwritten agreement not to undercut the other, so prices inflated and stayed still for so many years.
Funny thing is, until I started following this stuff when the iPhone came out, I finally realized how badly we were being taken advantage of. Our only hope is Globalive winning a Canada-wide roaming license so they can operate a new GSM carrier in Canada and show all the current carriers how you attract business.
We can also pray that Rogers wasn't able to secure exclusivity. If Apple is smart, they would have left it open for other carriers, knowing full well what was going to happen to us and hoping that the spectrum auction gives good results.

Thanks for the insightful clarification! I don't believe in competition in all fields (medical or the public transport sector for instance) but in The Neths it has worked for the tech sector.

It provided us with relatively cheap internet (20-30 euros for 20 mbit dsl) and competitive priced mobile communications.

I always thought my monthly 40 euros / 63 cad (including unlimited HSDPA internet) was pretty steep, but it's apparantly not so bad.

Well Rogers has done it again, showing it's yellow monopolistic teeth! 2GB of Data per month with the $115 Package? Are these bastards for read! This all is stemming from he fact that there are no competition for Rogers in Canada! No other GSM Service Provider! I was planning to buy at least 3 iPhone 3Gs, but I changed my mind! no iPhone till Rogers stops this draconian Pricing on the data! What I can not understand is this: Why Rogers has such a problem with DATA? Why? At least can they stop issuing decrees and actually explain to their clients? 2GB a Month? This is a disgrace and it shows what Rogers think about their Canadian Customers! They truly think that we are stupid - ignorant jerks that know nothing or are capable of learning anything! Well I have news for you, Rogers: WE ARE NOT! I am not going to get the 3 iPhone 3G, until they offer UNLIMITED Data Plan! I am sure that most people, after finding out what Rogers is doing, they will cancel their purchase of iPhone. Apple should have NEVER gives iPod to Rogers in the first place! Unlimited Data has been the cornerstone of Apple's agreement for allowing a Service Provider to sell it. Rogers held out and Apple gave up, which very uncharacteristic of Apple. I guess Apple doesn't care about the it's Canadian Clients either!

Well I agree with what everyone has said so far.

But I do see this as a turning point with Apple now in the market. We can use Apple as a leverage now, in a positive and friendly manner of course, to hep bring cell rates down in Canada. How different are we from our American counterparts to have such gauging cell rates? Do we really talk that much less, or do we get paid more? I don't think so, and I don't think that I would utilize my iPhone in any way that would differ from an American.

As with the thoughtful post of "Johnny Appleseed" we should direct our concerns to Apple, not to make their life difficult, but because they are our only leverage to Rogers. I'm sure many have you have tried to talk to Rogers CS and probably gotten nowhere to even get a little response from someone higher in the food chain. But if we can voice our concerns (hopefully not using our precious weekday minutes so I guess we'll be calling at 9:01pm) it can be reflected that Apple's customers are not satisfied with the services they are receiving.

I'm more than a little choked that not only is it not close unltd data, or even 5gb, but that we still have to pay for ridiculous extras like more texts, call display, and most importantly...a System Access Fee, which is a lot like Income Tax from the war. I'm pretty sure it doesn't cost anymore to the actual network to allow for unltd data, and really when you average it out I'm pretty sure it will be quite low; but I guess they just need to find a way to gouge those who will probably go over it.

There's my 2 cents (though not little but I hope insightful)

This is a much better deal than I'm getting on my current Blackberry plan on Rogers which is limited to 25mb of data for the same price.

I wonder if they will be evening out prices for the berry plans in accordance with this.
