Rogers announces iPhone rates in Canada

We've known for awhile that Rogers would be bringing the iPhone 3G to Canada, but we didn't know what kind of plans would be offered. Well, the wondering can stop because Rogers has just posted a website detailing all the service plans and features you can get for your iPhone in Canda, and how much it'll cost you.
As you can see from the above chart service plans start at $60 (Canadian) and go to $115. Interestingly, there is no unlimited data option which might cause trouble down the road when you load up your iPhone with lots of heavy network using 3rd party apps.
Check out Rogers' page for all the details.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

My god, their announcement is about their NEW "RAPE PLAN!"
Please don't buy your iPhone in Canada. Buy a US phone, jailbreak it and then walk into a Rogers and tell them what they lost. Also make sure to write to Apple (in a professional manner please) and tell them that the gift they gave Rogers is about to be anally inserted to Canadians. I'm betting that this was not an intended use for an iPhone.
ROGERS, YOU SUCK! I truly hope you fail and Canadians wake up enough to tell you. Then I hope you actually listen.

Can you tell me how a Canadian can buy an iphone in the US? I planned to do this, then get it unlocked and use it in place of my current Rogers phone with existing plan, but was told today that you cannot purchase the iphone in the US (at apple store or AT&T store) without signing a 2 year contract with AT&T (which, as a Canadian I can't do). Please tell me there's a way around this because I DON'T want to give Rogers any more money than I already have!
Any advice would be appreciated... still desperate for an iphone!

Hey Sunita,
I am not sure t is possible for a Canadian to get the 3G in the US and bring it back, like you mention. This in part is due to the ID requirements that US purchasers have. They must provide US government ID like a birth certificate, visa, passport or something similar. I am in Washington state for the next week and will try to get one and will report back on my success or failure. Should I fail, I'll likely hit a Costco up for a new iPod Touch and keep my crappy TELUS plan. Have I mentioned to you how much I also HATE TELUS.
ONE DAY TELUS AND ROGERS AND BELL, YOU WILL GET YOURS! You have had state-sponsored rape of Canadians just about long enough. I for one have had enough of System Access Fees, 911 Fees and so on. The governement really should be taking all of you to task for the egregious charges alone... BUT NO! They too are in my pockets!

As a Canadian in the UK this smells like BT in the 90s, charging by the megabyte. They got the message and were forced to change, but took them 2 years and a lot of foot dragging before they got DSL here. They have a monopoly and they tend to screw everybody they can.
Complain to the CRTC they are the one's allowing this Corporation to run roughshod.

I think this is just a ploy because Roger's network is not up to speed, and they are trying to limit people's usage of the network - at consumer's expense!

Fuckn Rogers! No wonder Apple seems to have issues with giving up control to other companies of the user experience because this is what happens! No iPhone for me. Rogers sucks... but then again so do all mobile companies in Canada.

I am thinking about the 400Mb plan -> wonder how much data a light-user would actually go through.. say medium-rich websites for 2 hours a day + 20min. youtube + hotmail/gmail with small pic attachments - think I can get under 400Mb?
On a sort-of-related note - is there a piece of freeware that counts the amount of bandwidth data you use when you are surfing Safari/Firefox - it would count when you open the browser and tally it up when you close the browser - I would be interested in how much data I actually go through in a day on my desktop - so I could compare...

Okay, that was easy. Rogers just saved me a lot of money. No iPhone for me, since I hardly ever call (I racked up 80 dollars on my pay as you go phone, which has a mandatory 10 dollars a month fee) and would only use the data plan. And 2 GB is not nearly enough for my browsing needs.

Yup....
Thanks Rogers for saving me the Cash. I will stick with my 32GB iPod Touch with is a fantastic piece of hardware!!!
Can't wait for the app store.

Jer, the iPhone keeps track of data useage. I reset mine every month on my 2G and I typically run in the 75-100 MB range every month for checking email and light browsing.
As an owner of an unlocked 2G phone in Canada, I'm definately not upgrading to a 3G. My voice plan currently clocks in at $42-ish a month and includes 450 daytime minutes, unlim eve-weekends starting at six and caller id, voicemail, 200 texts, etc. Add the $30 data plan on top of that and I'm doing WAY better than the iPhone plans as offered.
I'm sticking with my current phone unless Rogers starts offering an unlimited plan.

Those rates are pretty high by U.S. standards, even for voice. Still, I guess I'd rather they be honest about what their network can do than to advertise "unlimited" data rates and then cut people off, as is occasionally done in the states.

I agree that the Rogers rates are expensive, but after checking out Bell Mobility, they seem really cheap.
From Bell Mobility, Voice plans are also unlimited eve/weekends (evening being after 9pm)
$30/150 Minutes local time
$35/250 Minutes
$45/450 Minutes
But Bell's data plans are outrageous. Check these numbers out
Email and Internet Windows/Palm
$15/month 2MB
$25/month 4MB
$60/month 30MB
BlackBerry Email and Internet
$25/month 4MB ($12/MB additional data)
$40/month 8MB ($8/MB additional data)
$60/month 30MB ($6/MB additional data)
$100/month 1GB ($3/MB additional data)
So Rogers rates are expensive, but it would be much worse with bell.

Bell and Telus has came out with a $30 unlimited plans for their smartphones.
Martyn said 10:22AM on 6-29-2008
A friend of mine subscribed to the bell unlimited plan when it first came out and a couple of months ago they called him to let him know they were no longer offering the unlimited plan.
I did not see any reference to an unlimited data plan on the bell website when I checked it earlier. Their website is down at the moment, so I'll have to check again later.

And Rogers screws all canadians again.
Seriously this is rediculous. I was excited for the new iPhone, but there's no WAY I'm going to switch from a $25/month plan to a whopping $60/month plan just for a freakin' iPhone. I'll just get a new iTouch instead!
Rot in Hell you awful awful company... I hope you get screwed.

On july 3d T-Mobile The Netherlands will unveil its plans.
They already said the cheapest subscription will be 29,95 euros (47 dollars). That should include 2048/384 Kbps limitless internet and allow access to 1400 T-Mobile WiFi access points.
No idea what they'll charge for the iPhone though.

So it seems that the average is about 200mb.
FINE.
But WHY THE HELL WOULD ROGERS CHARGE SO MUCH?
My patience has finally run out with this company.

My e-mail to Apple today...
I am a huge Apple fan. I drop about $40-60 a month in the iTunes Store. I own an iMac, an iPod Shuffle, a 5G iPod Video, an 8GB iPod Touch, and am soon going to be getting an Apple TV and likely an Airport Extreme.
So you can understand my glee when I found out that the iPhone 3G was going to be made available in Canada.
That glee has turned to disappointment after the announcement of the pricing plans by the Canadian iPhone partner - Rogers Wireless.
To me, the idea of having a single, seamless device that can facilitate all my communication needs (both telephone and internet) is a great one. The fact that the Canadian partner has decided not to offer unlimited data plans as part of its offering changes the very nature of this device from one of free-flowing, integrated-in-to-my-life use, to a tool where the ever-present concern is that the meter is running as I use it.
As a result, I will not be purchasing an iPhone 3G. Until the Canadian wireless partner can bring forward pricing plans for its service which are more closely aligned with the natural operating design of the stunning product Apple has created, I simply cannot justify purchasing an iPhone.
I hope - as the visionaries behind the product - Apple takes a serious look at the service pricing scenarios which Rogers has put forward for the iPhone, and takes the appropriate steps to rectify this problem.
