iPhone 2.0 firmware release date hidden under our noses
Since its announcement, we've all been speculating about the iPhone 2.0 firmware release date, but Apple has been hiding the date under our noses all along. "iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers," Apple notes in the original iPhone 3G press release (8th paragraph).
Many have told me (
Thanks for the tip, Austin!

July 11th, so ppl: don't upgrade to 2.0 before getting your brand new 3G, or you won't be able to sell your unlocked v1 to anyone but an AT&T client.

Excellent point. I need to remember that. I'll be upgrading my wife's iPhone first to try it out and then, if it's jailbreakable or even unlockable, I'll do the same to mine. This way I can decide whether or not I want to go for the new 3G iPhone, which I have been told by someone in AT&T that it will be very difficult to unlock since Apple has put some new stuff in there.

I don't get why people even entertain the idea it'll ship before then. It'll be available the day the new iPhone comes out. I can't see Apple letting version 1 phone users have access to all the new goodies before the people paying to get a second gen one. It'll be simultaneous or slightly later, why would they ever considering doing anything else?

Exactly! This rumor was clearly started as wishful thinking.

It's pretty easy. Steve Jobs told the World that it would be released in June. Steve needs to live up to his promises, and maybe release things on the time scale he originally states.

Honestly, I agree with them holding it back.
I was thinking last night, hoping it would come out early. Then, in my thought process, I came across a likely reason they are doing this.
If the 2.0 came out today, and the app store did as well, people would start buying stuff right away. Then, they would get the 3G (some of them) and then they would complain that they can't transfer what they bought to the 3G. Then its a PR crapfest again with everyone who didn't have the forethought to consider the outcome crying and im sure the consumerist would have its typical crap slinging fest with it...
It's easier to just wait.

"Live up to his promises"? Steve "promised" you it would be out in June, and he didn't live up to his "promise" to you?
Less whining on a Monday, please :p

@josh
do you have something official to back this up? "Then, they would get the 3G (some of them) and then they would complain that they can't transfer what they bought to the 3G." Aside from hardware upgrades, you can lose or break your 2/3G phone and face the same problem, and not everyone will be getting new hardware on the first day (I will not be in line on 7/11)... something tells me there's going to be a way to transfer your apps - but there will also be a way to prevent you from running the same copy on more than one phone.

idk but the download went up outside of itunes last night.... speculation

Yes a 'stall date' makes perfect sense. Apple has long been renowned for provided release dates then launching products early... err... wait that's in another universe. Here on Earth they have a hard enough time meeting announced launch dates.

I heard on the local television news today in CT that 2.0 and the apps store was coming online tomorrow. Took me by surprise.

That could have been someone misreading July 11 as July 1.

This is dumb. I've known this all along. Don't you guys read and listen? I think you got a little too caught up in the rumor mongering.

Yeah 11th July is really "the end of June" , for god sake they are taking their sweet time with this.
WWDC was the most boring in a long time, just basically showing what was demoed months ago and still hasn't been delivered

Not unlike last year's WWDC, which was a rehash of the "sneak peek at 10 new features of Leopard" shown at the previous year's WWDC.
I agree with Paul (#2) above, in that it wouldn't make good business sense for Apple to release v2.0 before the 3G comes out; people who were on the fence about upgrading might find the v2.0 firmware "good enough" to keep their 1G. Although, Apple has a habit of doing some things for the benefit of users despite taking a loss. On the other hand, Apple is the poster child of not cannibalizing sales of X to sell more of Y... Uh, ignore me, I'm confused.

Don't you think their download servers and infrastructure will be busy enough on the 11th as it is? I mean, there will be a boat-load of 3G activations, OS upgrades for 3G and 2G phones, iTunes 7.7 downloads, etc. Why risk some of the issues with slow-downs and delays they had last year at launch? Launch iTunes 7.7 and the 2.0 SW update a few days prior to 7/11....and let that MASS hit on their infrastructure from all the existing 2G phones take place prior to a few MILLION more phones hitting the market on 7/11 - no? Maybe I am just being silly....

Either Cory doesn't know Apple and thus shouldn't be bloggingor he's looking for page hits because he can't think of anything else.

Steve said the phone wouldn't come out until July 11th in the WWDC. I can't believe anyone is expending ANY energy trying to determine when the firmware is coming out. People need hobbies.
