iPhone 2.0 firmware release date hidden under our noses

Since its announcement, we've all been speculating about the iPhone 2.0 firmware release date, but Apple has been hiding the date under our noses all along.

"iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers," Apple notes in the original iPhone 3G press release (8th paragraph).

Many have told me (3 times 10 times) that this date most likely is a stall date; in other words a "latest possible ship" date for the release. We noted last week that the iPhone 2.0 firmware has already gone gold master (received shipping status); however, we might not see the new firmware until the iPhone 3G is released on July 11th.

Thanks for the tip, Austin!

The update worked great, however, my mail app crashes every time I open it. Is there a fix for this yet?

Hey Thaddeus ? How did you manage to get the update ???? iTunes 7.7 keeps on telling me the current version is 1.1.4...

This site worked for me. Especially seeing how the official update for 2.0 @ the Apple site cost $9.99. (Lame). The tech gut I spoke to today regarding my mail app issue (he, thinking I got the official update, which in fact has the same build as the early release I got), he told me that it is most likely that the server was slammed, due to high volume, and that the mail app portion did not download properly and to restore. I'm about to restore my 2.0. Either way, I await JAILBREAK for 2.0

For some time now iTunes has told me it will check for an update on 7/10/08. It doesn't update this date like it usually does when I check for update on another day.

Makes sense that they would update the day before the 3G launch to reduce load on launch day.

Apple is still stating that access to .Mac Bookmarks ends on June 30, 2008 via the following link. This is what I originally saw soon after the WWDC that I thought had been deleted. I was mistaken.

Is there a way to filter out posts by a specific TUAW blogger?

Yeah, it's called scrolling over and not reading them.

This is by far no a useless post, many of the TUAW staff were speculating that the App Store would come earlier than July 11th. After hearing the last TalkCast with people saying the 8th, I had to send this tip in. Now everyone knows for sure, with no arguing, that 2.0, as well as iPhone 3G, and iTunes 7.7 are coming on July 11th, 2008.

Steve's keynote means nothing since the press release came out after and supersedes or clarifies anything he said. 2.0 will come out July 11. You can all bicker over what "early July" means.... or when Steve mentioned "late June." It's out when it comes out but Apple's press releases are rarely wrong when they mention exact dates.

Does anyone here actually develop software? Apparently nobody has ever heard of shipping delays. Even Microsoft—arguably among the biggest developers ever—couldn't ship Vista on time. These things happen all the time.

I agree with James, why wouldn't the games, software, ect. sync to your new device just like they do with all your other purchases... Think People!

@ Darien

It was never my intention to provide "hard" evidence, as I'm not an attorney. I was simply making my own prediction. More than anything, it's just wishful thinking on my part, as I'm growing very tired of waiting for the App Store.

So you are saying that either the firmware is going to come out the 11th or its not... great reporting.

Noo... They are confirming that the 2.0 Software is coming out on July 11th, and supporting their statement with text from an official press release.

Oh.. heh.. I guess you're right.
Damnit TUAW, it says "on July 11th" not "sometime around July 11th"!!
