iPod touch 1.1.5 software also available

Apple yesterday released an update for iPod touch for those users who don't want to pony up the ten bucks for the 2.0 software update. However, Macworld could discern no difference between 1.1.4 and 1.1.5, and no release notes are available.

I'd conjecture that the same security fixes that were included in the 2.0 update are included in this one, similar to the way Tiger is still updated with security patches. At least, I hope that's the case.

Obviously, no functionality is offered as a part of the update: you'll have to spring for the 2.0 update for that.

You can download the update via iTunes by clicking "Check for Updates" with your iPod connected to your computer, and opting out of the 2.0 upgrade.

Thanks, David and Toon, for the tip!

What happens to the people who downloaded 2.0 from the Apple.com link and got the 2.0 firmware for free and it shows 2.0?

My opinion, is they treat Ipod touch users really badly.

I still think they withheld the applications for the Ipod Touch that they could have implemented right away, then added it and charged people to upgrade.

Now they're also trying to charge for this upgrade too? I know Ipod Touch players aren't giving that same monthly fee, but it's in Apple's best interest to sell more apps.

I'm pretty sure it was implemented because of a glitch in the iTunes store to get the new firmware 2.0 for free.
We used to be able to do this:

1. Update itunes to version 7.7.0.43 or later here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ And install it.

2. If you are on an old beta of 2.0 or on 1.1.4 click on restore in iTunes. If you're very lucky 2.0 will already download. If not, don't worry. The best is to restore to 1.1.4 before starting.

3. Download ziphone at http://www.ziphone.org and install it. Plug your iPod in and open ziphone. Click on the advanced feutures tab at the bottom.

4. To the right you see a little menu with dfu mode/recovery mode/normal mode.
Click on the dfu mode button.

Dfu mode means "device firmware upgrade mode" and let's the iPod forget "who he is" so iTunes can't recognize it.

5. If everything went well you see an iTunes icon with an USB cable on your screen. Now open up iTunes again and click on restore. An agreement window for 2.0 will come up and just accept that. If that doesn't happen cancel the restore and decline the agreement. then go to c:Documents and Settings[USER]Application dataApple ComputeriTunesiPod Software Updates. Move the "iPod1,1_1.1.4_4A102_Restore.ipsw" file to your desktop so that it doesnt show up anymore in the folder. Then click on restore again. (thanks to LordChaosZ).
I didnt verify this. It might now work but logicaly it sould.

6. Normally 2.0 should download by itself.

Oh i forgot to add.
Now instead of 2.0 popping up, right when you press not right now or no thank you, 1.1.5 comes up. Instead of 2.0 downloading.

I was wondering about this...it seemed kind of odd to publish a list of huge security problems and then require people to pay for a $10 upgrade to fix them.. At least they are doing the right thing here, though you'd think it would actually be less expensive for them just to give away the 2.0 upgrade than continue to maintain fixes on the old version.. Unlike OS X none of this iphone/ipod touch software is wonderfully mature yet. The effort to backport this stuff is probably quite significant.
