iPhone 3G shortage could last for a month

Contrary to other analysts' rosy comments about Apple's supply chain, Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray is estimating that shortages in the supply of iPhone 3G handsets will last until mid-August.

Munster said that he'd wager "we'll see problems for another two to four weeks," adding, "early demand has been more than [Apple] expected."

Apple's own supply-checking tool reports that a little over a quarter of Apple Stores had iPhone 3Gs to sell today. The hardest model to find is the black, 16GB version. It was available in only 18 stores worldwide.

AT&T stores are also "nearly out."

Oh dear, i feel sorry for some of you I waited for only 90 minutes to get my hands on mine on iphone day at the o2 store in the nice warm manchester arndale mall served with muffins and water provided by the friendly staff. It was well worth it, the phone rocks.

wow, what Shortage? I just had to replace mine.. the store was like "Well we don't have any right now since its 7:45pm, but try tomorrow" then i called the other one near me and they say "Yea, we have alot of iPhones 3G 16Gb Black" i was in shock, and ran there to get a replacement for my already-scratched iPhone (stupid case)

i see no shortage.

"just go to The Cube. the line moves quick there, and they have enough in stock where you can go at any time - since, in fact, they are open at any time!"

I thought that as well when I was in line in Paramus. I was about to give up and just go there at 2am. But the guy behind me said he called and they told him that they do stop selling the phones at some time at night. So I just waited another 2 hours.

NYC update: Lines at Apple Stores are still long, and they're starting to run out of phones. The blog "Racked" has a good update:

Here in Baltimore, MD (Towson location - Apple Store) I waited 3.5 hours to get my hands on a 16GB White. When the doors open, they had all 3 models.... after 2.5 hours, they sold out of all 8GB and Black 16GB.

Definitely worth the wait... seeing as I was furious I waited at an AT&T store last Friday, only to be told an hour after opening, that they were only stocked with 12-16 TOTAL phones. I, unfortunately, was 18th in line...

By the time you put a case on one, it doesn't matter what color it is.

I ordered a white model on Launch day and got it Tuesday! MY friends who ordered black models are still waiting. ha ha

Since last Friday I have waited in line at four separate stores with multiple visits to some only to be told (after waiting in line for anywhere from 0:30 to 1:30) that the 16GB black model was sold out. I'd be happy (?) to wait in line but the supply chain availability has been a real black eye for Apple so far.
