1Password for iPhone announced
We gave you a first sneaky peek at this a couple of weeks ago, but now the full details of the 1Password app for iPhone have been posted online by the team at Agile Web Solutions. This is going to make a lot of the people who added comments to our iPhone apps we crave post very happy.
The app's features include:
- dual PIN and Master Password security, so you can quickly access "less important" stuff via the PIN
- wireless secure sync with one or more Macs
- built-in browser
- and it's free! (The desktop app costs $34.95 for a single license.)

While I like 1Password, I've been quite happy with SplashData's SplashID which has had a client in the app store since day 1. Plus, its a bit more portable. I used the client version on a PC connecting to a Treo, then later on a Mac to the same Treo, and now from the Mac to an iPhone. The s/w's sync cleanly and work very well across multiple OS's/devices.

why do you insist on spammin this product so relentlessly? I'm all for ad-supported sites, but this sort of blatent shove-down-your-throat advertising just isn't on.

1Password's a great product on the Mac, and well worth the $40 they charge.
How many articles have they done on it? I didn't even notice the first one last week?
Two articles makes SPAM? You're a tough audience to please, aren't you?

Normally I'd agree with you, if I didn't use 1Password and realize it's a totally kicka$$ product. It really does impress, and I can't imagine living without it now. Very glad to see it coming to the iPhone!

Maybe because it's a good product that's widely used and praised by the Mac community, this blog's primary readership?

tico has a point - it gets mentions on Jul 21st, 9th 8th, 6th and 2nd, June 26th, 18th, and so on.... The iPhone seems to be the only other thing getting this much attention.
It's good, but it's not that good. *Still* waiting for a fix for the issue with Safari Stand, devs *still* say they're working on it, but then constantly bring out other things ahead of it.
I've never fully understood the obsession, given the issues it still has.

@DistortedLoop. You are 100% correct. 2 articles does not make it spam. 2 articles per week since about April does.

Uggh ... and the wait for Apple to approve begins now :(

This is a completely pointless app because it can't access Safari or its settings - and Safari will always be the default browser.

Dom:
Maybe you're not aware that 1Password can fill in stored login information for you, both on the desktop and in Mobile Safari on the iPhone? Unless I'm misunderstanding your post.
Dom said 2:49PM on 7-21-2008
JRob: No, it can't. Apple does not allow that functionality on the iPhone.
That's why it has a built in browser. You have to use the built in browser every time you think you might need to remember a password.

@JRob's correct: http://static.agilewebsolutions.com/1password/user_guide/using_iphone.html
A little research on their site's blog reveals more:
"@ukroell: Unfortunately, due to Apple’s rules, we can not integrate the native 1Password iPhone application with mobile Safari. This is why we have integrated the browser functionality right into the 1Password app and honestly, I think it’s a much better solution."

Screenshot of the great bookmarklet here:

It works with regular mobile safari.
DrWho said 3:44PM on 7-21-2008
The way I read that was to use 1password you go to the logins app, select an entry and it opens that entry in safari for you (rather than going to safari to enter the web page)
Could be wrong but it seems logical.

Is it always going to be free?

Sure hope Apple rushes this one out to the store. Been dying for this one! 1Password is the best app of it's kind out there.

"That's why it has a built in browser. You have to use the built in browser every time you think you might need to remember a password."
That's not true. They have a javascript bookmarklet that works with regular Mobile Safari as well. I use it now and it's amazing.

1password is such a polished, well supported program, that I'm willing to give their browser implementation a shot. I'm betting that it will work out well (I wouldn't normally be this optimistic).
However, in their blog post (regarding the old "bookmarklet") they do say "these bookmarks will be replaced by this new native iPhone/iPod touch application." So they will be removing the bookmarklet feature as soon as the new native application hits the itunes store.

1Password is the best password manager there is by far. I used Splashdata on my various Palms for years, but 1P does it better by entering your UID and pwds for you with the click of a key combo. Plus it looks so much better since it's a Mac only app.
