Apple releases 2.1 Beta 3 to developers
Check your email, iPhone developers. Apple has released iPhone OS 2.1 beta 3. The description of changes is typically cryptic:"iPhone OS 2.1 beta 3 is now available and is to be used for testing only. View the Pre-Installation Advisory for iPhone OS 2.1 beta 3, Readme, and Release Notes before installing the new versions of the iPhone OS and SDK. As a reminder, pre-release software is Confidential Information and is subject to the terms outlined in your Registered iPhone Developer Terms and Conditions with Apple."
Of course, we don't know what's been changed in this release. Note that iPhones updated to OS 2.1 beta 3 cannot be restored to an earlier version of the OS, and apps developed a beta OS 2.1 cannot be submitted to the App Store.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

"Of course, we don't know what's been changed in this release."
TUAW doesn't know because you didn't download it, or because you are bound by the NDA not to discuss it?

The download link is no good for PwnageTool 2.0.2 right now. Just get a screen of random characters.

WHY can't some registered and paid developer access these beta releases?? What'd I pay for anyway?! Come on Apple...I'm a fanboy for sure, but lately I'm getting more than a little upset with your actions!

Drew, are the emails they send out not actually sent to every developer? I had just assumed they were. I got mine this evening around 7pm est if that helps.

Nope, I didn't get any emails and when I login to the dev site I only see the firmware 2.0 stuff that was there on July 11th with the official release.
I was accepted into the program on July 11th and from what I've heard and seen it seems like devs accepted prior to July 11 can access beta releases, and devs accepted after that cannot.
Makes no sense to me! We all paid the 100 dollars so ...

Calm down it's a beta, I got in but I have no intention of downloading it as I'm working on improving my 2.0 code and implementing bugfixes etc. There really is no point in downloading it, and only people who spent the 99$ just to get an inside look and download betas are whining. There is nothing to see, a lot of people just want to download it and brag about how cool it is (which is one reason why I'm glad we have the NDA)

As a developer who COULD have access to this, I still can't quite understand how this is very useful when they don't allow apps to continue to be submitted and they basically warn me that I can't go downgrade. I'd love to toy around with some of the new features, but unless I had the cash to buy a bunch of extra devices (and I don't -- and are there really many developers that do around here?) this just makes me more annoyed at all these restrictions Apple is imposing.

Erica Sadun points out that you *CAN* restore iPhones to before 2.1 by putting it in DFU mode (see her post about it) and restoring it the normal way.

Did you guys said anywhere that with 2.0.1 we can watch video in landscape mode both ways ?
I just noticed that. Maybe it was part of 2.0, I don't know I always watch my videos on the same side.

That was in 2.0 as well. :)
iamwatson said 3:00AM on 8-09-2008
That was in 1.1.4

What's with the image? Couldn't you get a newer one that didn't have cingular as the carrier?

I believe that is the rumored "mini iPhone." That's why it's not the standard iPhone 3G image...

So can applications still be installed from the app store when running beta 3?
