Speaking as a sufferer from unilateral deafness, an iPod firmware upgrade that finally added a mono function would be nice...

I'm with you there. I am completely deaf in my left ear, and in fact, usually cut the left speaker from my headphones. Sometimes, however, especially with classic rock and such where they really experimented with stereophonics, there is an entire instrument or part of the band missing.

No firmware at this time.
that is what the magic ATE ball it tellin me.
Mac ppl here, in russia are quite excited too. Hope they announce new laptops, wheee!
and yeah, it's almost 7pm here in moscow, 2 more hrs to wait
My guess is...
The iPod touch will be getting GPS and 3G for data only. That way you'll be able to buy apps and music when ur out of WiFi range. I also think Apple will release turn-by-turn driving directions in their own app. There was a reason they blocked the 3rd party devs from doing this... because they want first shot at it.
Also... I can't wait to see what iTunes 8 has to offer. Community type features along the lines of Last.fm would be awesome. I'd like the ability to add iTunes buddys and see what they are listening to.
Lastly... an iPhone firmware update would be very welcome. A firmware push to squash some bugs and add much requested features along the lines of copy/paste would totally rule.
This is a longer post than I usually do here on TUAW... but I'm pretty stoked about the possibilities and current batch of rumors surrounding this announcement.
They definitely won't put 3G on the iPod Touch, Apple has always wanted to minimize over-lap of their products, and I don't see why they would give the Touch part of what makes the iPhone so spectacular.
iTunes 8 is nearly a definite possibility.
And...I doubt they'd have a press event where they're telling the press to "make sure to be there" when they're gonna release a firmware update. Seeing as we just got 2.0, no major update seems to be in the works.
This wouldn't work, because for 3G you need a SIM and a data account, and this would take away the majority of the iPhone's perks over the iPod Touch. Many people buy the Touch to avoid the commitment that the iPhone presents.
