Is this Steve's car?
iPhone Savior believes that they have a picture of Steve Jobs' car. The picture, taken outside of the Yerba Buena Center shortly after the "Let's Rock" event last Tuesday, depicts a Mercedes SL55 AMG without a California license plate. Why doesn't Steve have a license plate? Well, the old story goes something like this: He convinced the California DMV to allow him a barcode sticker instead of a plate after several incidents of stolen plates. Now, don't take this story to the bank, because there's several versions of it.
iPhone Savior has more pictures posted on their site, along with an in-depth write up about the car in question.

That barcode sticker is standard on many new cars - it's the vehicle's VIN number in barcode form. Steve probably just removes his plate when he parks the car to avoid stolen plates.

Wow.. an environmentally unfriendly V8, when Jobs could have a hippy-dream Tesla Roadster (not making fun, I love the TR)? Never would had pegged Jobs to own something like that...

Steve has actually always been known to drive cars like this. Just look it up. There are a lot of obsessed fans who are constantly reporting on Steve's activities and what he drives. It's just a bit too obsessive for me.

Yeah i don't really care too much what Jobs drives. I mean he's worth billions, it's a safe bet to say anyone that has his net worth would be driving a $100K+ car.

Agreed!
"OMG!! Pictures of a guy's car who drove to an event he was at!! Spread the word internets! Steve drives a car!!"

And if you run the VIN, WDBSK72F67F124082, thru this site;
http://old.mbclub.ru/mb/vin/?lng=eng
you can see what the car has for optional equipment:-)

This is just stupid. Why should we really give a damn about Steve's car? I don't give a rat's ass what he drives.

But you care enough to comment on it, instead of just scrolling down to the next article....

LOL I can confirm that that is Steve's car. One time I was "sightseeing" in San Jose, and it "just so happened" I drove past his house. A license-plateless Mercedes that looked exactly like that was in the driveway.

Nice try, Steve Jobs lives in Atherton, California. Not San Jose. His house is surprisingly small for how much money he has.
hal said 9:41AM on 9-15-2008
Hey! I actually did drive past, I just don't live in California and I don't know the differences between the cities. Yes it was small. I never said was big, did I?

Apparently, he has multiple houses according to the Apple books I have read. Not sure about Atherton or San Jose, but definitely one in Palo Alto... I have been there ( http://web.archive.org/web/20070315194836/www.garden2.net/share/archives/000356.html ).

Wow, it's no wonder Mac users get hit with the "fanboy" label

@Ed
No kidding. This site sure does post some worthless fanboy garbage quite often.

Actually I was reacting more to the comments than the post itself in this case, as Cory was just doing the standard TUAW re-reporting of someone else's story. Although I can't disagree with your point either.

Yeah, that's Steve. I used to be a Mac Genius, and when I was in Cupertino for my two weeks of training, we saw him parking and walking into 1 Infinite Loop every day at 9am sharp. That's definitely his car--I've seen him and seen him driving it.
And he really does park in the handicap spaces. I've also seen him do that. Just about any Apple employee who has been at 1 Infinite Loop in the morning has seen that happen.

TUAW should really tighten up their act, some of these posts are embarrassingly bad.
What's the point of a (very) short blurb on Steve's car that repeats the myth of how he personally convinced them to let him drive without plates, when the *impetus* for said blurb (which is actually linked to in the body!), is an article that states that this is just not true?
Not only is this just a link to a five day old (much better) article, it's incredibly brief summary of same is just plain wrong. Did the blogger even read the article he is linking to here?

I'm with you on this one, Jeremy. I'll sum up this article in 2 bullet points
2 - Steve drives without license plates because he is willing to the accept the consequences, whatever they may be, legal or monetary.
3 - Steve has an expensive whip, because he is successful, and has enough money to do so.
People shouldn't care about this stuff. Any honestly, I was like "hmm.. I wonder if he's thought about a Tesla because he's environmentally conscious and a vegan to boot..", posted as such, and now I don't care. But continuing to comment brightens my day, so I'll do that.
Remember uberfans, Steve Jobs is here to serve YOU, not the otherway around unless you're getting a paycheck out of Cupertino! That why he heads a company that gives you consumer products! Does Steve Jobs care if you like him on a personal level, or idolize him because he drives a Mercedes? No. He wants you to buy an iPod, or a Mac, or recompile your Linux/Windows app to OS X so people have another reason to switch off of a blah blah grey box TO a Mac. He's not your friend, and would probably think you're a stalker if you're in the parking lot snappy shitty pics of his car with your cell phone. If he wasn't about a buck oh five these days, I'd suggest he shove his fist in your mouth if you stalk him.
