Joost now available for iPhone/iPod touch
Joost, the on-demand video streaming service that came to the Mac a while ago, has now made its way to the iPhone and iPod touch. The video service features music videos, TV shows, and even movies ... and you can now watch all of them on the go. You can browse videos by Joost picks, popular videos, browse videos by category, and search for videos. Joost uses a custom built video viewer, as opposed to the regular video player that is used by the YouTube application. I didn't really like this custom view, nor the inability to rotate the video. I also had some troubles trying to watch a video; sometimes I would be presented with a "Playback Error." When I was able to view a video, it stuttered all the way through to the end.
The Joost application is a great start for the video on-demand service, but I would like to see tighter integration with the Joost platform. Right now, this application just seems like an alternative to the YouTube application that's already built into the device. If you are a Joost addict, however, you might want to check this application out. You can download it today on the iTunes App Store.

Too bad Joost doesn't have anything worth watching.

I am a huge TUAW fan but lately you guys have been sooo slow. I was using this app on Saturday because I randomly saw it on another huge site. I can understand you not being able to catch everything but gizmodo seems to be bigger Apple fanboys than you guys lately.

Okay Ryan, I'll take the bait and defend tuaw for ya.
There are almost 10,000 apps at the app store and you found one that they hadn't reviewed?! Holy Shit Batman! It's enough to make ya switch to a pc.

POOR ORGANIZATION: When I browse a genre, I should get a sub folder of a show instead of endless lists I can't ever get to the end of. For example; Browsing TV / SciFi / should get me to a set of sub-folders containing the shows with further sub folders of seasons (eg Babylon 5 / Season 1)
NO CACHEING: If I need to exit the app or can't finish a show for some reason, I can't go back to where I was. I have to start over from the beginning.
ASPECT RATIOS: Too many shows have the wrong aspect ratios. THIS MAKES THEM UNWATCHABLE.
It's a nice first try, but not ready for prime time. If future versions fix these issues, it'll be cool, but until then it's a beta.

I agree. The organization is terrible. You have to go through pages and pages of videos just to find out what series they have available. On top of that the interface is sloppy, and the app keeps crashing. It really needs some more polish.

worked great for me, was watching an episode of Friends last night on my original iPhone over wifi without any lag or crashing. I am on the 2.2 firmware.

Knowing that it works only on wifi and not on 3G networks would be a useful piece of info!

I second that...
That's the kind of info I would expect to read in a quick review like that.

They have a lot of content, but it is organized HORRIBLY.

Oh yeah.
NON STANDARD VIDEO INTERFACE: C'mon guys, I need to tap a little box to maximize the video? What happened to double tapping it, like every other video player on the phone. It doesn't even have the same video controls. It's like they're not using Apple's APIs or something.
Sloppy work, really.

There's actually a good bit of content on there -- I had fun watching several Ren & Stimpy episodes. But I agree that the UI goes from OK to downright atrocious. The media controls look like amateur hour. The organization (crucial to a library of content) is pathetic.
Still, Ren & Stimpy. And music videos.

Now if only Hulu would produce an iPhone version.

Crashtastic Crapola. Great idea (*cough*HULU PAY ATTENTION!*cough*) but it has no state memory as mentioned above. It's bad enough to have to exit the app and not get back to where you left off, its worse when the damn thing crashes and you can return, especially in a movie.
Slow as hell too.
Great idea, bad execution.

Joost's content is not very good. When does Hulu come out with an iPhone app so we can watch their Flash TV Shows & Movies on the iPhone. Please! Please!

Every time I see a headline for "Joost" over the past couple of days I read "Joust" and get very excited for one of the funnest games ever...
oh well... at least I got to use "funnest" in a post.

How long before Apple shuts it down due to the "Sexy" category. I actually saw a nipple in several of the videos. If they took down that wallpaper app for "suggestive" content, what are they going to do to Joost?
