WAIT, is the unattached iphone out yet, if so is it the same as the unlocked ones in other countries? And if I buy this refurb offline will they make me commit to a contract^? I have the first gen already, and i'd like to just activate a refurbed 3g with pwnage..

Just ordered. For some reason, you can't upgrade a line with AT&T to an iPhone, but you can add an iPhone to your account as a new line.

Called apple care yesterday to ask if the refurbs are covered under Apple Care...was told they are. ATT store "poo-poo'd" refurbs saying they have short warrenty...with apple care doesnt really matter. Right?

I'll just c&p what I said earlier this month: "I really like the iPhone, but the TCO is far too high to justify the purchase, no matter what kind of discounts they give at the register. I don't care if the handset comes free in a box of Cracker Jack. That's the least part of the overall cost of the phone. What I want is a lower monthly bill. Right now my wife and I have a pair of Motorola RAZRs and the bill for BOTH phones together is $70 a month. That's the same as the cost of one iPhone. That's the price which needs to come down (a LOT - at least 25%) before I consider buying an iPhone. $1,680 over a period of 24 months for a single phone...no, I'm sorry. It's just too much."

Simon, you also don't have an unlimited 3G data plan. The plan price has nothing to do with the iPhone. That's the price you pay for a 3G data plan you for ANY phone under ANY carrier in the US--In fact it would cost you the same to have your 2 Razr's have a data plan! (Please, no Sprint SERO comments.)

My girl and I actually have 2g iphones on tmobile, and our bill for both w/ unlimited data, 400 sms and 1000mins to split costs a total of 80-85. I know it's not 3g, but I don't care; 3g isn't wifi, and I'm rarely ever outside a zone w/ wifi.

Damn. If only there was a way to buy this without the contract.
I've been watching eBay etc for a used one at twice that. When I find one, Apple/At&t will get 0% of that $200. If they'd just sell one sans contract, they'd be getting 100% of my $200. C'mon Apple.

The article fails to mention that AT&T refurbs, unlike Apple refurbs, come with only a 90 day warranty.

Juan I think the article is referring to the rumor about a $99 dollar iPhone at Wal-Mart, not Wal-mart offering iPhones in general.

So, I've heard that there's an app for Jailbroken iPhones that limits their internet usage. I personally have a regular Samsung AT&T 3G phone with no data plan, so any internet usage is absurdly expensive (1 cent per Kb = $2 each time it checks visual voicemail). I do not want the phone using mobile internet unless it is from a wifi hotspot. Does this app work on the latest iPhone so that it will not use 3G or EDGE under any circumstances? I really just want an iPhone for apps and convergence, and I like that this is over $100 less than the iPod Touch. I'm assuming another AT&T phone does not need any sort of cracks on the iPhone to use the SIM card.
Also, can I get visual voicemail on this phone without the iPhone plan? As in, will it check for visual voicemails when it gets internet via a Wifi hotspot? I cannot see paying $30 a month for a data plan, but I'd like to save over $100 on an iPod Touch that's also a cooler looking phone.

are you sure that Apple Care won't cover ATT refurbs? That is not what the apple care guy told me...I specifically told him it was an ATT refurb and he said it would be covered. Or are you referring to warranty only and not Apple Care?
